More Preterite Spelling Changers
-aer, -eer, oír, -oer, -uir

-aer, -eer, -oír, -oer Verbs with the above infinitive endings use the endings “-yó” and “-yeron” for the third person forms (usually, there are some exceptions). The remaining forms all gain an accent over the letter “i” in the ending. So the only form without an accent is the third person plural. (-yeron)

-uir Verbs that end in –uir change the same way, but the written accent on the letter “i” only occurs in the yo form.

creer – to believe creí creíste creyó creímos creísteis creyeron
En ese momento, él no creyó la verdad. In that moment, he didn’t believe the truth. * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * creyeron is the only form without an accent.

caer – to fall caí caíste cayó caímos caísteis cayeron
El libro cayó del estante. The book fell from the shelf. * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * cayeron is the only form without an accent.

leer – to read leí leíste leyó leímos leísteis leyeron
Leí seis libros para la clase de ingles. I read six books for English class. * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * leyeron is the only form without an accent.

oír – to hear oí oíste oyó oímos oísteis oyeron
¿No oíste la fecha del examen? Didn’t you hear the date of the test? * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * oyeron is the only form without an accent.

huir – to flee huí huiste huyó huimos huisteis huyeron
El criminal huyó del lugar del crimen. The criminal fled from the scene of the crime. * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * huí is the only form with accented “i”

destruir – to destroy destruí destruiste destruyó destruimos
destruisteis destruyeron El tornado destruyó el pueblo. The tornado destroyed the town. * “y” replaces the “i” in the 3rd persons. * destruí is the only form with accented “i”
