Northerners and Southerners Democrats nominated- James Buchanan (PA Born) Why? He had not been involved in the Kansas-Nebraska Act

He opposed the spread of slavery Who won? Buchanan (Fremont lost support from slave states)

Slave of an army surgeon from Missouri Sued for his freedom because- He argued that he had become free when he lived in free territory

Dred Scott Decision Key issues for the Supreme Court:
Was Scott a U.S. citizen or just a slave? Did his time in free territory make him a freed slave? Was the ban on slavery in parts of the Louisiana Purchase constitutional?

Concluded that all African Americans were not U.S. citizens Determined that Scott had not become free by living on free soil Declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional
