Summary GABA is expressed in carotid body chemoreceptor type 1 cells. GABA released from the CB during hypoxia, inhibits sensory discharge postsynaptically via a shunting mechanism involving GABAa receptors. GABAb receptor-mediated activation of TASK-1 or related channel provides a presynaptic autoregulatory feedback mechanism that modulates fast synaptic transmission in rat carotid body.
