The Common Inspection Framework 2012
Inspectors will explore the extent to which: learners progress to courses leading to higher-level qualifications and into jobs that meet local and national needs teaching, learning and assessment support the achievement of learning goals and career aims leaders and managers successfully plan, establish and manage the curriculum and learning programmes to meet the needs and interests of learners, employers and the local and national community. 3

Outstanding leadership and management
The college makes excellent use of labour market intelligence to ensure that the curriculum meets local, regional and national socio-economic needs. Apprenticeships have expanded significantly to match the needs and ambitions of learners, employers and local communities better. The very flexible and well-thought-out engineering programmes meet the needs of local employers. Initiatives to engage employers in training are extremely beneficial. Apprenticeship officers ensure learning programmes maximise the learning and skill development opportunities for apprentices. 4

The challenges Prioritising provision according to local and national needs. Involving employers, including SMEs, in ensuring that young people are well matched to the apprenticeship they wish to pursue. Raising the profile of apprenticeships among young people, their parents/careers and schools. Improving systems to collect and report data on the number of apprentices who, on completing their apprenticeship, secure permanent employment that builds on their previous learning. 5
