The Aftermath After the battle, Gettysburg was in shambles
More than 51,000 killed, wounded, and missing soldiers left behind Wounded and dying crowded into every building in the town Many of the dead were hastily buried or not buried at all

Day 1—July 1 Battle of Gettysburg begins about 8 a.m. on McPherson Ridge By 3:30 p.m., the Union line breaks and troops fall back through the town to Cemetery Hill 27,000 Confederates vs. 20,000 Federals engaged

Day 2—July 2 Confederate army takes high ground on Seminary Ridge
Confederate troops attack both the right and left flanks of the Union forces Assaults on both Union flanks turned back, with some loss of position

Day 3—July 3 Late in the afternoon, Union center repulses “Pickett’s Charge” Position reached by Confederate troops on Cemetery Ridge called “the High Water Mark of the Confederacy” 20,000 Confederates vs. 20,000 Federals engaged
