2. Modern United States Johnson’s Great Society (US.96)
An attempt by President Johnson to pump federal dollars into a program which:
1. job training
2. education for low income children
3. inner-city development
4. housing for low income Americans
5. medical acre for the poor

3. Modern United States Medicare (US.96)
A major program of the Great Society that has remained. National insurance program that provides for citizens 65 or older who have worked and paid into the system. It also insure younger Americans with disabilties.

4. Modern United States urban renewal (US.96)
An attempt to modernize cities, as the local government would move businesses, people, roads in order to build new commercial centers, new highways, or new entertainment centers. Sometimes this went too far and resulted in negative gains for cities.

5. Modern United States War on Poverty (US.96)
Part of Johnson’s Great Society where the federal government passed the Economic Opportunity Act. This was an attempt to battle the 19% national poverty rate.

6. Modern United States counterculture (US.97)
Questioned traditional social and moral norms. Most the of the 1950’s was about trying to be as alike as possible, while the 1960’s will break from this (for many).

7. Modern United States hippies (US.97)
Many supported political causes and/or social movements. They affected music, clothing, hairstyles, art, the drug culture, and community living.

8. Modern United States generation gap (US.97)
Differences between parents/children including language, appearance, art, music, etc. During the 1960’s, this gap was very large, as the baby boomers brought numbers, and the social upheaval inspired them.

9. Modern United States Woodstock (US.97)
In August 1969, more than 400,000 people came to this New York farm to listen to 32 musical acts. It would become one of the most important musical experiences in American history.

10. Modern United States Nixon - silent majority (US.98)
This referred to those Americans who did not join in the large demonstrations against the Vietnam War at the time, who did not join in the counterculture, and who did not participate in public discourse. Nixon saw this group of Middle Americans as being overshadowed in the media by the more vocal minority.

China – Visited China in First contact in decades. Allowed countries to at least communicate with one another.

Democratic national headquarters were broken into. Eventually, investigation led to the White House, and President Nixon’s resignation.

The purpose of the break-in was to wiretap the phones to gather information on the Democratic Party. Five men would be arrested, as they caught at the scene.

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein investigated the story (Washington Post). While Nixon may not have known about the break-in, he was involved in the cover-up.

16. Modern United States United States vs Nixon (US.99)
The Senate held hearings and demanded tape recordings form the Oval Office. Some of the tapes had been erased. Nixon resigned just before being impeached for:
1. obstruction of justice
2. abuse of powers
3. contempt of Congress

17. Modern United States Watergate - changing role of media and journalism (US.99)
1. Inspired a generation of many top young students to become journalists.
2. Led to great scrutiny by the public about our government (Watergate + Vietnam).
3. Media no longer will readily use extra resources to thoroughly research a story.

18. Modern United States Ford’s pardon of Nixon (US.99)
One month after Nixon resigned, Ford pardoned him for any crimes he committed in office. At the time, this was quite controversial. It cost Ford the presidency in 1976.

19. Modern United States legacy of government distrust (US.99)
Watergate ushered in a period of cynicism and distrust of the government, and at times, journalists. While it could be argued that this has always been the case, it was certainly amplified in this period and remains today.
