What is Engineering?

Engineering Habits of Mind (EHoMS)
Which Engineering Habits of Mind will you use today in the challenges? Explain background.

Engineering Design Process

Imagine & Plan

Air pollution near your school…
Find your school on the map Are there roads near you that are red or orange? How does this make you feel? Write words around the map that describe your feelings. Compare this to the map of Greater Manchester. How do you feel about the difference between your school area and the whole of Greater Manchester? Red lines = roads going above the legal limit of air pollution Orange lines = roads that are at risk of going above the legal limit of air pollution

Civil engineer Chemical engineer Electrical/ software engineer Automotive engineer Materials engineer Road diversions Public transport What will happen when the sensors detect illegal levels of air pollution on the roads near your school? Designing new fuels Designing a chemical to remove air pollution App design to warn/ inform Traffic light system diverting cars Different types of engineers Designing cars that do not emit CO2, nitrogen oxides or sulphur dioxide Teachers – it is up to you to decide if you want your pupils to work in 1 big group or 2 smaller groups Designing materials that could absorb air pollution or stop people breathing it in

What will happen when the sensors detect illegal levels of air pollution on the roads near your school? Pick one of your ideas to pitch Plan a 60 second pitch that you will give to the rest of the groups that includes: - What is your idea? - How does it work? - How does it solve the issue with air pollution? Practise your pitch

60 second pitch & question time

Create & Improve

Look at the plastic collected… Why is plastic a problem?

Why might pupils in your school feel lonely?

Using the plastic you have collected, make something that can help young people in your school that may feel lonely. Could be to connect with other people or with nature Possible suggestions include games (bowling, skipping rope, etc…); toys; musical instruments Teachers – it is up to you to decide if you want your pupils to work in 1 big group or 2 smaller groups

Using the plastic you have collected, make something that can help young people in your school that may feel lonely. Plan a 60 second pitch that you will give to the rest of the groups that includes: - What is your idea? - How does it work? - How does it solve the issue of loneliness in your school Practise your pitch (there will be 2 pupils that will be staying with your creation)

Go to other groups around the room: Look at what they have created

Evaluation... Each school will have 2 evaluation sheets:
Tally boy’s responses on one Tally girls’ responses on the other

Congratulations on completing The Greater Manchester Engineering Challenge 2019!!!
