Detecting putative methyltransferases requires multiple bioinformatics approaches depending on the existing information for each reference group of superfamily members. An overall scheme of these methods is depicted here; a fuller description is given in the text. Previous bioinformatics searches for novel methyltransferases have used the MEME and MAST programs (4).
