3. Background
When employees are working near moving traffic it is important for them to:
Be aware of their surroundings
Wear the required PPE
Face traffic whenever possible

4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Employees working near moving traffic must wear high visibility clothing in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)

7. Additional PPE worn as needed
Safety glasses when working with equipment that produces flying debris
Hearing protection when working with power equipment
Safety boots that lace up above the ankle
Appropriate clothing (tyvek suits, aprons, gloves) when mixing or applying chemicals

8. Safety near moving traffic
Schedule jobs near busy roadways during low traffic periods
When operating an edger or weed eater, always stand facing traffic
When operating a mower always move against the direction of traffic

Pay attention to surroundings and traffic flow
Lower guards or chutes on mowers, avoid sending debris near vehicles
Know when you are blind to oncoming traffic

10. Safety near moving traffic
If blind to oncoming traffic, ask co-worker to watch for traffic and warn both you and the motorist
DO NOT assume that drivers will see you and avoid hitting you
Scout area for hazards, like slippery slopes, that could project you into oncoming traffic

When working in areas that may be blind to oncoming traffic, such as around corners or hill, it may by necessary to post “Men Working Ahead” signs to warn motorists

12. Additional precautions
Add additional reflective or high visibility tape to backpack blowers
Install the reflective triangles used for slow-moving equipment on the back of riding lawn mowers

13. Safe parking Park in a safe and legal spot
Verify parking spots with property owner or company manager to avoid tickets
Especially important in city of Atlanta
Verify with homeowner where vehicle should be parked or driven
Avoid damaging property or blocking their vehicles

14. Safe parking Be cautious when entering through gates
If gate closes automatically, ensure you have enough clearance and time to clear
If parked longer than 10 minutes, place one orange cone in front of vehicle and another in back
Avoid blocking vehicles and pedestrians

15. Safe parking
When parking behind parked cars, make sure they have enough space to back out of the parking spot
When backing your vehicle, always use a spotter
When parking your vehicle on a curb on a roadway, ensure traffic is clear before opening door and exiting vehicle

16. Safe parking
If parking on a steep incline, chock wheels or turn the wheel sharply towards the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling
ALWAYS turn off your vehicle and set your emergency brake
Make sure you have enough clearance to lower the ramps on your vehicle
