What is an Earthquake? An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. Seismic waves contain a tremendous amount of energy and can be very destructive.

What Causes an Earthquake?
Tectonic plates slide past one another and cause a disruption in the ground, causing the Earth to shake. Volcanic eruptions can cause earthquakes. This is common in areas near volcanoes.

Effects of an Earthquake
The energy released from an earthquake is 10,000 more powerful than the first atomic bomb. Buildings are easily destroyed. Earthquakes can often release a tsunami, a giant wave that causes massive flooding. Fires often start during Earthquakes as electric lines are broken.
