Year 9 English Homework Tasks | Term: Spring 2 | Topic: Short Stories
Instructions: Each week you will complete one piece of homework. This will be either one of the activities below, or revision from your Knowledge Organiser for a test in class. Your teacher will let you know what homework activity you’re doing and when this should be handed in.
Skills being practiced:
Reading Skills:
Show your understanding of what you have read by using quotations and analysing the effect of these on the audience or reader.
Writing Skills:
Show off your range of vocabulary, your understanding of grammar and your ability to write creatively.
Research Challenge:
You will need to use a computer or a library to help you find the information needed to complete this task.
Homework activity:
Read Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl; this can be found on Show My Homework or online:
Answer the question: How does Roald Dahl create tension in the short story?
Make sure that you examine the writer's methods and explore the effect on the reader.
Aim to write at least 2 enhanced MQA paragraphs that are linked.
Write a detailed five-part plan for a short story about a time your overcame your biggest fear, making sure that you include a range of reminders for ambitious vocabulary, paragraphing, sentence construction etc.
You should make the plan so detailed that another student should be able to a story based on your notes.
Give your short story plan a title and explain your choice.
Research the history of the short story: when did they first appear? For what purpose?
Do you think that short stories are still as important today? Why?
