FLOW CHART

TEXAS TECH DEFENSE PHILOSOPHY
THE TRADEMARKS OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY DEFENSE ARE AN ATTACKING, SWARMING DEFENSE. DEFENSE THAT GANG TACKLES AND MAKES BIG PLAYS WITH EMOTION. PRINCIPLES: SWARM “OUT-PHYSICAL” THE OPPONENT ASSIGNMENT EXECUTION NO LONG RUNS OR PASSES CONFIDENCE ATTACK FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND IN TECHNIQUES MAKES BIG PLAYS PHILOSOPHY
4
PASS RUSH PHILOSOPHY MENTAL APPROACH:
PRESSURE ON THE PASSER EXEMPLIFIES THE SPIRIT AND AGGRESSIVENESS OF A STRONG DEFENSIVE UNIT. MUST BE AN INTENSIVE, “HELL-BENT” ATTITUDE TO GET TO THE PASSER. SACKS ARE A GREAT COMPLIMENT FOR DEFENSE (IF ALSO PLAY RUN SUCCESSFULLY) MORE IMPORTANT THAN SACKS: CONSTANT PREESURE ON PASSER FORCING BAD THROWS BLOCKING HIS PASSES FORCING HIM TO RUN IN GENERAL, MAKING HIM SO JITTERY HIS TIMING AND EFFECTIVENESS ARE DESTROYED. PHILOSOPHY
5
PASS RUSH PRINCIPLES ANTICIPATION OF PASS SITUATION KNOW YOUR OPPONENT
KEYS INITIAL MOVE ESCAPE BLOCKER RESPOND TO PASSER RESPOND TO BALL PRINCIPLES

ATTACKING PROTECTIONS
WHERE BACK ALIGNED WHICH WAY THE CENTER SLIDES BACK IN 3 SPOT – CENTER WORKS AWAY FROM TE 90% OF THE TIME BACK IN 2 SPOT OR 4 SPOT CENTER USUALLY GO AWAY FROM THE BACK PURPLE PERSONNEL PRO PERSONNEL FOUR PERSONNEL
8
PASS RUSH STUNT PHILOSOPHY
PASS RUSH STUNTS ARE DESIGNED AS A CHANGE UP FOR 1 ON 1 PASS RUSH MOVES. WELL-EXECUTED STUNTS NOT ONLY GET SACKS, BUT WILL ALSO KEEP THE OFFENSIVE LINE OFF BALANCE AND GREATLY AID OUR INDIVDUAL MOVES. PASS RUSH GAMES ARE DESIGNED TO: FOUL UP BLOCKING ASSISGNMENTS FORCE A ZONE TEAM TO GO MAN (DELAY AND GRAB) STUNTS CAN FORCE A MAN TEAM TO GO ZONE –QUICK STUNTS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A STRONG OR WEAK OPPONENT SET UP SPEED MOVES CONFUSE, DISORGANIZE, AND WORRY OFFENSIVE LINE PHILOSOPHY
9
PASS RUSH STUNT PHILOSOPHY
STUNTS CAN BE RUN DELAYED OR QUICK. THE KEY TO ALL GOOD STUNTS IS THE SECOND MAN. THE LOOPER MUST CONVINCE HIS OPPONENT THAT HE IS RUNNING A 1 ON 1 PASS RUSH MOVE. THE LOOPER MUST ALWAYS TRY TO MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT WITH HIS OFFENSIVE MAN, THEN ALWAYS RUN THE STUNT AS TIGHT AS POSSIBLE. FINISH ALL STUNTS WITH GOOD PASS RUSH TECHNIQUES. ALL PASS RUSHES SHOULD FINISH WITH A RIP. PHILOSOPHY
10
PASS RUSH STUNT FIRST LINEMAN – PENETRATING GAP AND GAIN BODY POSITION (GET TO THE BACK OF THE BLOCKER) SECOND LINEMAN – JET AND SELL 1 ON 1 RUSH – DELAY – WORK AROUND TIGHT AND READY TO MAKE A MOVE ON ANOTHER BLOCKER (LINEMAN OR RUNNING BACK) MUSTS
11
OL VS. TWISTS RULE #1 MY MAN I BLOCK UNLESS HE HESITATES OR BACKS UP.
RULE #2 MY GUY HESITATES OR BACKS UP – I GET DEPTH. RULE #3 IF AFTER HE HESITATES – I SWITCH.

TYPES OF STUNTS RIGHT NOW – USING QUICKNESS IN THE STUNT TO FORCE THE OPPONENT OUT OF QUICK AGGRESSIVE BLOCKING. DELAYED - A DELAYED STUNT IS USED TO FORCE THE OPPONENT OUT OF AREA BLOCKING. GRAB - TO HOLD THE OPPONENT IN THE GAME TO FORCE THE OPPONENT OUT OF MAN OR AREA BLOCKING. FIRST MAN IN THE STUNT VS. MAN TO MAN BLOCKING GRAB YOUR TEAMMATE’S MAN AND TAKE HIM WITH YOU. THIS WILL ALLOW YOUR TEAMMATE TO COME FREE ON YOUR STUNT. FIRST MAN IN THE STUNT VS. AREA BLOCKING GRAB YOUR MAN AND TAKE HIM WITH YOU. THIS WILL ALLOW YOUR TEAMMATE TO COME ON THIS STUNT.
14
OL VS. DELAYED TWISTS LOOK AT EYES (W/ OG FOR E-T). EYES WILL TAKE YOU TO STUNT! AS SOON AS HEAD TURNS – BACK UP! CLASSIC RUSH – FAKE RUSH. WHEN SEE A CLASSIC (SHAKING) BACK UP!
15
STUNT TECHNIQUE COMPONENTS COMPONENETS OF A “STUNT” PENETRATOR
ALL STUNTS HAVE A PENETRATOR AND LOOPER PENETRATOR DEFINITION DL WHO PENETRATES INTO A PREDETERMINES GAP PLAYING RUN FIRST AND PASS SECOND. KEYS THE BALL FOR TAKEOFF, TO THE PREDETERMINED LINEMAN FOR BLOCK REACTION. ON DROPBACK PASS HE WILL SWITCH PASS RUSH LANES WITH ANOTHER DEFENSIVE LINEMAN. TECHNIQUE CLEAR STEP – TAKE A 6 INCH, 45 DEGREE DIRECTIONAL STEP WITH THE INSIDE FOOT ON SNAP OF THE BALL. POINT TOE AT 45. CROSSOVER – DRIVE OFF AND EXPLODE OUTSIDE LEG AND CROSSOVER TO INSIDE “GAP”, OUTSIDE FOOT MUST LAND ON OFFENSIVE OF LOS, POINT SQUARELY UPFIELD COMPONENTS
16
STUNT TECHNIQUE COMPONENTS LOOPER
RIP AS YOU CROSSOVER – DIP YOUR OUTSIDE SHOULDER AND RIP INSIDE AND UPFIELD TO CROSS BLOCKERS FACE AND TAKEAWAY BLOCKING SURFACE MOVE MUST BE MADE LOW ENOUGH AND WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO RUN THROUGH A DOUBLE TEAM BLOCK. ADJUSTMENTS PENETRATOR EYES ARE ON NEXT INSIDE BLOCKER, IF BLOCKER’S HEAD COMES OUTSIDE REDIRECT AND CROSS HIS EYES. IF BLOCKER BLOCKS INSIDE CLOSE HARD TO HEEL OF OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. IF BLOCKER YOU ARE LINED UP ON BLOCKS DOWN AND YOU CAN’T CROSS HIS FACE, PULL YOUR HEAD OUT AND CLOSE OFF HIS HIPS. LOOPER DEFINITION DL WHO WILL TWIST AROUND THE PENETRATOR IN A STUNT. HE WILL PLAY RUN FIRST AND TWIST ONLY AS VS. DROP BACK PASS. COMPONENTS
17
STUNT TECHNIQUE COMPONENTS
AGAISNT RUN A LOOPER PLAYS HIS NORMAL RUN ASSIGNMENT. VS. PASS BLOCK, SELL THE INDIVIDUAL RUSH UNTIL PENETRATOR TAKES GAP. ATTACK QB WITH OUTSIDE LEVERAGE, STAY ON QB’S OUTSIDE NUMBER. TECHNIQUE LOOPER – SELL 1 ON 1 RUSH. ONCE PENETRATOR HAT IS IN CRACK – LOOPER STEPS IN DIRECTION OF PENETRATOR AND UP THE FIELD. LOOPER PERFORMS BEST PASS RUSH MOVE ON PENETRATOR AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE. COMPONENTS
18
E-T STUNTS END – PENETRATING MAN (FIRST)
MOVE OFF THE BALL QUICKLY. KEEP YOUR OUTSIDE SHOULDER LOW AND UNDER THE O.T. BEAT HIM AND GET DEEP PENETRATION. FIGHT TO STAY IN YOUR PASSING LANE. DO NOT BE DRIVEN OVER TO THE CENTER’S AREA WHERE HE COULD HELP OUT. MAN TO MAN BLOCKING – TACKLE WILL TRY TO STAY WITH YOU. CONTINUE TO PENETRATE SO THAT YOU WILL STOP THE OG FROM PICKING UP THE LOOP TACKLE. AREA BLOCKING - YOU MUST PENETRATE BEFORE THE OG CAN PICK YOU UP. WORK TO GET TO THE BACK (GTB) OF THE GUARD. BE ALERT FOR ANY INSIDE RUNS. TACKLE – LOOPER (SECOND) HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CONTAINING THE PASSER. HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO COME FREE ON MAN TO MAN BLOCKING. AREA BLOCKING - HOLD YOUR ENGAGE LONG ENOUGH TO LET THE END CLEAR, THEN GET OUTSIDE QUICKLY. STUNTS
19
T-E TACKLE – PENETRATING (FIRST)
GET OFF QUICKLY. GET HAT IN THE CRACK AND RICHOCHET OFF OG TO THE BACK OF OT (GTB). READ CAGE OF OT: 1. HAVE OT EARHOLE TO YOU – GTB. 2. HAVE CAGE TO YOU – RIP OUTSIDE AND WORK UPFIELD FOR CONTAINMENT. MAN TO MAN – CHARGE SHOULD SHUT OFF THE OT AND GIVE THE ENGAGE MAN A GOOD CHANCE TO BE FREE. AREA BLOCKING – GET THROUGH THE GAP QUICKLY BEFORE OT CAN PICK YOU UP. READ CAGE AND RESPOND ACCORDINGLY. END – LOOPER (SECOND) GET OFF BALL QUICKLY. SELL THE SPEED RUSH. WORK EYE CONTACT WITH OT (ENGAGE OT W/ HANDS) STEP AROUND PENETRATING TACKLE TIGHTLY (BEST MOVE) AND GET UPFIELD AND BREAK THE POCKET. MAN TO MAN – GOOD CHANCE IF TACKLE SETS DEEP. TWO STEPS TO HIM AND STEP AROUND QUICKLY AND GET UPFIELD. AREA BLOCKING –BE READY TO TAKE THE OG ON. HAVE TWO WAY GO ON OG. BE ALERT FOR ANY INSIDE RUNNING PLAYS.
20
T-T 3 TECH STEP AND RIP IN “A” GAP – LOW AND HARD. AS WORKS UPFIELD HE SHOULD PUSH THROUGH THE “A” GAP TO KNOCK OFF CENTER (GTB) NOSE – GET OFF QUICKLY AND JAB AT THE CENTER TO THE BUBBLE SIDE. AFTER JABBING – THE NOSE SHOULD BREAK TOWARD PENETRATING 3 TECH. NOSE SHOULD LOOP TIGHTLY (BEST MOVE) OFF 3 TECH G GET OFF – PENETRATE WITH RIP TO CENTER. TURNING SHOULDERS TO MAKE HIMSELF SMALL, HE SHOULD FOCUS ON THE CENTER. CENTER SLIDES AWAY : NOSE SHOULD RICOCHET OFF HIS BACK TO GET UPFIELD. IF CENTER BLOCKSTO HIM : THE NOSE SHOULD CROSS CENTER FACE AND WORK UPFIELD. 3 TECH GET OFF ON SNAP AND FAKE AN UPFIELD CHARGE. HE SHOULD THEN LOOP TIGHTLY OFF OF NOSE (BEST MOVE). HE SHOULD DRIVE THROUGH SHOULDER OF GUARD AND GET UPFIELD.
