1 Graphic Scores homework
Experimental Music Due week beginning 4th March

2 This piece of music is based on a Thunderstorm
This piece of music is based on a Thunderstorm. Your homework is to have a go at writing down this piece of music using graphic notation….  “Where do I start?!” The piece of music is one minute long. You could create a timeline from 0-60 seconds for your score and plot the sounds you hear on the timeline. Hot Chilli: The actual score is written inside the face of a clock, so this is another type of score you could use (15 seconds of music in each quarter). “How do I write down what I hear?” A Graphic Score uses lines, pictures, squiggles and shapes to notate sounds that can be heard – there are some examples on the next slide. Think about how the size of a shape, thickness of a line or the height of where you write your graphic on the score could represent volume, tempo and pitch. Different graphics would represent a different sound that you can hear. “How much should I try to do?” All students: focus on the first 15 seconds of music first and see how you get on. Medium chilli: include the last 15 seconds of music. Hot chilli: have a go at the entire piece. There are 7 different types of sound in the entire piece – see if you can identify them all. Bring your score to the next lesson and we will compare them to each others and the real score. Good luck!
