Retrieving Information
MEMORY Retrieving Information
2
How do we get the “stuff” out?
Recall- retrieve info not in conscious awareness Recognize- identify previously learned Relearn- amount of time saved, the 2nd time around
3
1. Recall How many letters are in the alphabet?
What’s your mom maiden’s name? (always fill-in-the-blank questions) What are the names of all the people in your graduating class? What would make this question easier to answer?
4
2. Recognition Multiple choice questions
Much easier to answer if you see the memory on paper Recognize the people in your graduating class “Have you seen this person before?” “Is this a new outfit?”
5
3. Relearning History class- learn about the Civil War for years and every year you “relearn” it. Each time you learn the information quicker.
6
Retrieval Cues Used to target info
Mnemonic, priming “wakening of associations” Web of Associations Context Effects- where you learned it
7
State dependent memory
What we learn in one state, is easier to recall in that state Mood-Congruent memory Experience consistent with one’s current good/bad mood World perceptions
