3 WHAT IS ALEKS PPL? ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) combines a research-based, accurate placement assessment with personalized learning tools to help students refresh on lost knowledge. Key Features: Open-response, adaptive assessment using Artificial Intelligence Places students from Basic Math up to Calculus I Transitions from placement to individualized Learning Modules Students can re-take up to four additional assessments to improve their course placement

4 ALEKS PPL and Data Analysis
Provide a means for students to improve readiness and course placement Accurately identify students for developmental classes Place students into college level classes (with enforced prerequisites)

5 Improve readiness and placement
1st cohort had 6% usage and 2nd cohort had 16% usage of Prep Modules

6 Improve readiness and placement

7 Improve readiness and placement

8 Improve readiness and placement
Recap Approximately 8000 students tested Around 1100 re-tested We want to greatly increase the percentage who re-test ≈ 440 moved up 1 course and 400 moved up at least 2 courses Total savings ≈ $800,000

9 Developmental Classes Pass Rates vs. ALEKS Placement Score

10 Gray = Before ALEKS, Orange = After ALEKS
Developmental Classes Gray = Before ALEKS, Orange = After ALEKS

11 Developmental Classes

12 Developmental Classes
Recap Accurately identifies where students fit in these courses We will work with Enrollment and Student Success to continue to improve our plan for these students Has not (yet) lowered the % of students needing these classes

13 College level classes %C or Better Math 110, 131, 133 & 215 (W17)
This is grouped data. Some of the courses the ALEKS students did very well, others not so much. But, when compared to Fall 2016 when the placement test only went up to intermediate algebra and prereq’s were first enforced – it provided a much more straightforward way to determine if they belonged in one of these classes (ones that many students come straight into out of high school). We had, literally, thousands of calls for overrides that semester.

14 Winter 16 to Winter 17 showed a 6.6% increase
All Math Classes This data was provided by our IR department (Thanks, Bruce) btw. Grouped again, and it includes 98 and 97. But, it does show an overall improvement in pass rates (C or Better) Winter 16 to Winter 17 showed a 6.6% increase

15 College level classes Recap
Properly places students who were without the prerequisite course here at GRCC, simplifying the advising process
