8
Female Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with
ESTROGEN Female hormone OVUM Female sex cell that is released from the ovaries during ovulation. OVULATION The release of one mature egg cell each month. FERTILIZATION Occurs when a male’s sperm cell joins with a female’s egg cell. IMPLANTATION When a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall at the start pregnancy. MENSTRUATION Uterine lining, the unfertilized egg, and some blood flow out of the body.
9
Functions of the Female Reproductive System:
Produces estrogen. Produces, stores, and transports ova. Provides a place for fertilization to occur. Protects and nourishes the fertilized egg as it grows and matures into a human being.
10
Ovary: *Female glands that produce and store ovum and produce and secrete female hormones.
11
Fallopian Tubes: *Tubes that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus. Fertilization occurs here. Fallopian Tube Ovary
12
Uterus: *Where the fetus is nourished prior to birth.
Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus
13
Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining
Uterine Lining: *The inner layer of the uterus. Implantation occurs here. If there is no implantation, the lining is shed through menstruation. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining
14
Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Cervix Uterine Lining
Cervix: *The bottom of the uterus that opens into the vaginal canal. Allows the passage of menstrual fluid. Protects reproductive system and developing fetus from pathogens. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining Cervix
15
Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Cervix Vagina Uterine Lining
Vagina: *The birth canal. It leads from the uterus to the outside of the body. Fallopian Tube Ovary Uterus Uterine Lining Cervix Vagina
16
How to take care of the Female Reproductive System:
Get regular checkups by a physician. Bathe regularly. During menstruation (period) change tampons and sanitary pads frequently. Monthly breast self-exam Practice sexual abstinence before marriage
17
New Terms Sexual Abstinence: Not engaging in sexual activity until marriage. Sexual Activity: Any genital contact. (There are many definitions for this. This is how we will define it in our class.)
18
Breast Self-Exam Done monthly Look for anything odd
Lumps Puckering of skin Change in nipple Discharge from nipple Change in breast size (size changes that aren’t normal) Be sure to check the armpit as well!
19
Any questions???
20
Matching Activity Match each term with its correct definition.
When you think you have them all correct, compare with another group. After you have compared, raise your hands and I will check you off.

Male Reproduction system
22
Male Reproductive System: Words to be familiar with
TESTOSTERONE Male hormone SPERM Male sex cell that enters the egg during fertilization. SEMEN Fluid that contains sperm and secretions from the male glands.
23
Functions of the Male Reproductive System:
Produces testosterone Produces, stores, and transports sperm
24
Testes: *Produce sperm & testosterone
25
Epididymis *Transports and stores sperm cells that are produced in the testes.
26
Vas Deferens: *Transports mature sperm to the urethra
Epididymis Testes
27
Seminal Vesicle: *Holds the liquid that mixes with sperm to form semen
Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Epididymis Testes
28
Prostate Gland: *Secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.
Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Epididymis Testes
29
Urethra: *Functions as an exit from the body. Releases sperm and urine.
Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Epididymis Testes
30
Penis: *Male reproductive organ
Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes
31
Scrotum: *Holds the testicles and keep the testicles at an optimal temperature.
Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes Scrotum
32
Bladder: *Stores urine
Vas Deferens Bladder Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Urethra Penis Epididymis Testes Scrotum
33
How to take care of the Male Reproductive System:
Get regular checkups by a physician. Bathe regularly Wear a protective cup or supporter during athletic activities to prevent accidental injuries. Practice sexual abstinence before marriage. Monthly testicular self-exam
34
Testicular Self-Exam Done monthly Feel each testicle, looking for:
A small, painless lump on the front, side or bottom of the testicle Abnormal changes in size of testicle Pain or achy areas in your groin. Extra fluid in scrotum
