Chapter 13 Section 3 What are climate zones?
Objective: Identify and describe the three main climate zones.
2
Latitudes and Climate Zones
climate zone: an area of Earth that has a certain temperature range and similar weather conditions
3
Latitudes and Climate Zones
3 main climate zones: tropical zone = warm zone near the Equator between 30°N and 30°S latitude polar zones = coldest climate zones above 60°N and below 60°S latitude temperatures do not go above 10°C middle-latitude zones = temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C. between 30° and 60° N and S latitude
5
DEFINE: What is a climate zone?
6
Solar Energy and Climate Zones
Energy from the Sun is the biggest influence on climate and weather. the amount of solar energy received at a particular spot is determined by the tilt of Earth on its axis the tilt influences the angle at which sunlight strikes Earth
7
Solar Energy and Climate Zones
Other factors that can affect the climate of a region include topography, location of lakes and oceans, availability of moisture, global wind patterns, ocean currents, and location of air masses.
8
Rainfall and Climate Zones
In each climate zone, there are smaller climate zones based on rainfall. In the tropics: climates can be very arid, or dry they can also be very humid, or wet In the polar zones: the climate is always cold and never humid The middle-latitude zones have many different climates
9
Rainfall and Climate Zones
affects human life determines the type of soil and vegetation found in a given area determines how the land supports living things
10
2. ANALYZE: What creates smaller climate zones within the larger ones?
11
13-3 Classwork Earth is divided into ___ climate zones.
Places with the coldest temperatures are located in the ___ zone. Places with the warmest temperatures are located in the ___ zone. The middle-latitude zone has many different combinations of ___ and amounts of rainfall. The middle-latitude zone is located between ___ N and S latitude.
