Rene Descartes ( ) The mind and the body are interactive machines, meaning that they work together Mind could influence the body and vice versa Allowed for both voluntary and involuntary behavior Understood that the brain was the center of thinking, not other organs (like the heart)

Rene Descartes ( ) Believed that human minds consisted of two types of ideas Innate ideas (like a belief in God) Derived ideas (those gained from experience

John Locke ( ) Empirical approach: knowledge is gained by careful observation Did not believe in innate ideas, but supported the notion of derived ideas Mind is a “blank slate” that is shaped by experiences Aristotle called this the tabula rasa
