1 Safe Staffing (NQB) Report for July 2018

2 Safe Staffing Reports / NQB
18 April 2019 Safe Staffing Reports / NQB Where we want to be: targets and benchmarks Target: Planned staffing levels are 100%, planned skill mix 70.4% RN:29.6% HCSW ratio Trends and Patterns The evidence collected for July 18 indicates that overall staffing levels have decreased from 100.8% to 93.5% compared to planned levels. The skill mix for July 18 increased to 64% for Registered Nurses and decreased to 36% for Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs). Root Cause analysis and insights Continued RN vacancies, supported by the temporary workforce which leaves a position of less RNs than planned on the wards. Actions and progress to date Continued proactive recruitment using a daily SKYPE process jointly with HR and nursing to recruit overseas nurses from multiple agencies. Good pipeline building with 40 potential overseas recruits in September along with the Newly Qualified Nurses. Monitoring of the impact of staffing levels at ward level due to vacancy and use of temporary workforce. This is mitigated by senior oversight and ensuring this shortfall is distributed between areas according to patient acuity. SAFE

3 Care Hours Per Patient Day Programme (CHPPD)
18 April 2019 Care Hours Per Patient Day Programme (CHPPD) Where we want to be: targets and benchmarks Introduction To provide a single consistent way of recording and reporting deployment of staff working on patient wards/units, NHS Improvement have developed, tested and adopted Care Hours per Patient Day (CHPPD). CHPPD is calculated to by adding the hours of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs) per ward and dividing by the Midnight bed occupancy figures for the ward. CHPPD reports split out RNs and HCSWs to ensure skill mix and care needs are met. The metric aims to illustrate how many hours each patient receives from either a RN or HCSW within any 24 hour period over the course of a month. Trends and Patterns The evidence collected for July 18 indicates that overall CHPPD is 4.8 hours for RNs, this is a decrease in comparison to the the previous month and 2.8 for HCSWs for PHT. HCSWs have continued to be above plan over the last 12 months and during that same period RNs have continued to be below the planned number of hours. SAFE
