1 Week 6: Compound Probability
Mrs. Brown Maternity Leave

2 Day 1: tree diagram sample space
Video:

3 Examples: Tree Diagram & Sample Space
Going out to Eat: fish, burger or chicken Fries or apple Milk or soda Look at the last row: 12 options Sample space is 12

4 Example: Tree Diagram Flipping two coins: Each coins has a Head and Tails Sample space: 4 options

5 Practice Worksheet All practice work may be done with your partner and with a calculator. If you are not behaving and focusing on the math, this privilege may be taken away by the teacher.

6 Day 2: Tree diagram: Compound Probability
Lets look back at the examples from yesterday. Once you have your tree diagram you can find the probability of events happening.

7 Example 1 P( combination with a beef sandwich) 4/12=1/3=33%

8 Example 2: P(chicken sandwich with apple) 2/12=1/6= 17%

9 Example 3 P(not getting a fish sandwich) 8/12=2/3=67%

10 Example 4 P( getting H and T) 2/4=1/2=50%

11 Example 5 P(not getting heads) 1/4= 25%

12 Practice P737 (1-6) All practice work may be done with your partner and with a calculator. If you are not behaving and focusing on the math, this privilege may be taken away by the teacher.

13 Day 3: Fundamental Counting Principle: Sample Space
When you only need to know the number of outcomes you can use this principle to find the number. It is much faster than using the tree diagram. Video:

14 Example

15 Examples From Day 1 Here is the same situation from Going out to Eat:
fish, burger or chicken Fries or apple Milk or soda 3 x 2 x2 = 12 outcomes This is the same sample space we found before, it just does not tell you what the outcomes are.

16 Example 2 from Day 1: Flipping two coins: Each coins has a Head and Tails 2x2= 4 outcomes This is the same sample space we found before, it just does not tell you what the outcomes are

17 Practice Worksheet All practice work may be done with your partner and with a calculator. If you are not behaving and focusing on the math, this privilege may be taken away by the teacher.

18 Day 4: Fundamental Counting Principle: compound probability
When using this principle you can find the probability of compound event easily. Find the probability of each even and multiply them together.

19 Example 1 P( heads and blue) ½ x 1/6= 1/12= 8%
P( tails and green or red) ½ x 2/6= 2/12= 17%

20 Example 2 P(Suv, blue and luxury) = ½ x ¼ x 1/3 = 1/24= 4%
Car Color Model SUV Red Standard Van Grey Luxury Blue Sport Black P(Suv, blue and luxury) = ½ x ¼ x 1/3 = 1/24= 4% P( Van, any color, standard or sport) = ½ x 4/4 x 2/3= 8/24=1/3=33%

21 Practice Practice: p 761(1-7)
All practice work may be done with your partner and with a calculator. If you are not behaving and focusing on the math, this privilege may be taken away by the teacher.

22 Day 5: Quiz Use your packet of notes to complete the quiz.
You have 40 minutes. There are NO RETAKES for open note quizzes!!!
