Opener (put on the back of page 49) Name the three elements of dance. In the following clip choose the most important element of dance for this performance and describe two aspects of this element for the dance seen.

3 Choreography Choreography is when the elements of dance are used to create visual compositions that use movement. Old lesson plan- students watched “Choreography” clip from White Christmas

4 Principles of Composition
Remember how the definition of dance talked about the principles of composition? They are: BEGINNING MIDDLE END Dances become artistic when they include the principles of composition.

5 Compositional Forms AB: two-part structure; made up of two different sections which may or may not be repeated Wade Robson – Ramalama ABA: three-part structure; three-part dance compositional form where the first and third parts are the same and the second is different Mia Michaels – Look Into My Eyes

6 Compositional Forms Call and Response: One soloist or group performs, with the second soloist/group answering or moving in “response,” often associated with African music and dance Fred and Ginger- “Isn’t it a Lovely Day” from Top Hat Narrative: Structure that follows a specific story line to convey information through a dance Kayla & Kupono - Gravity Fred and Ginger- “Isn’t it a Lovely Day” from Top Hat

7 Types of Dancing Performance: Participation: requires an audience
anyone can participate

8 Purposes of Dance Ceremonial:
dances created or performed for rituals or celebrations e.g., dances of Native Americans and West Africans to celebrate life events such as harvest, ritual dances associated with worship

9 Purposes of Dance Artistic Expression:
dance created with the intent to express or communicate emotion, feelings, ideas e.g., ballet, tap dance, modern dance, dance created and performed in a concert and/or theatrical setting for an audience

10 Purposes of Dance Recreational:
dancing for entertainment, to support recreational activities e.g., ballroom, line dancing, aerobic dance, dance as a hobby

11 Purposes of Dance Application
Objective: To demonstrate your knowledge of the purposes of dance by analyzing real life examples Assignment: Read the handout provided. For each dance described, complete the chart below your purposes notes. Note: The costumes must have color. Requirements: The entire chart must be completed with color where appropriate Time allotted: 15 minutes
