1 Note Taking – Eukaryotic Cells
Another reading strategy like close reading with highlighting Helps you to organize important information Allows you to analyze or break down more difficult information or concepts/ideas Helpful for studying Helpful for creating a summary

2 Eukaryotic Cells Cell Wall Cell Membrane Cytoskeleton Nucleus
Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum Mitochondria Chloroplasts Golgi Complex Cell Compartments Cellular Digestion Vacuoles

3 Eukaryotic Cells Cells are small but complex
Plant and animal cells are eukaryotic w/ similarities and differences Cell Wall Rigid, strong, gives shape Plant cells – cell wall made of sugars = cellulose Fungi cells – cell wall made of sugars = chitin Prokaryotic cells (bacteria and archaea) – cell wall diff’t from plant and fungi Cell Membrane Protective barrier Just under cell wall if cell has a cell wall Made of proteins, lipids, and phospholipids Lipids = fats Head of phospholipids are water loving (hydrophilic) Tails of phospholipids are water fearing (hydrophobic) Controls movement in and out of cell = protein passageways

4 Eukaryotic Cells Cytoskeleton Nucleus Protein web in cytoplasm
Keeps cell from collapsing (like skeleton) Helps cell move Nucleus Large membrane-bound organelle Contains DNA = genetic material of how to make cell proteins Doesn’t make protein but like the blueprint for how to make it Has a double membrane Nucleolus = dark area in nucleus and makes the ribosomes

5 Eukaryotic Cells Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum
Smallest, most abundant organelle Makes proteins Proteins made of amino acids All cells need protein = all cells have ribosomes Not membrane covered Endoplasmic Reticulum Makes proteins and lipids Is the delivery system Can be rough or smooth Rough = ribosome covered = protein making Smooth = no ribosomes = lipid making & detoxing

6 Eukaryotic Cells Mitochondria Power house Double membrane
Inner and outer membrane Breaks down sugars ATP made in the inner membrane Energy stored as ATP ATP is used to do work Has its own DNA and can divide within a cell

7 Eukaryotic Cells Chloroplasts(Try this one on your own! Read the section and determine the most significant parts) Organelles in plant and algae that perform photosynthesis = making own food Contains chlorophyll Green in color 2 membranes Own DNA Makes sugars

8 Eukaryotic Cells Golgi Complex Cell Compartments Cellular Digestion
Packs & delivers proteins Membrane “bubbles” pinch off and transport proteins Looks like smooth ER Cell Compartments Membrane “bubble”= vesicle Vesicles = the transporters/distributors in cells Cellular Digestion Lysosomes = vesicles that digest old stuff, waste, or invaders Contain digestive enzymes Found most in animal cells Vacuoles = vesicle Can be full of enzymes (digestion) or water (like in plants)
