Notice board What makes a good notice board?
What information could you put on a notice board? 5mins Notice Boards: Activity Sheriffs are responsible for creating and updating an A*STARS notice board. It will need to have a big/bold heading, easy to read and understand, up to date info, size, colourful, creative- have fun with it! Their first task is to put up information about the programme. What do they think would be useful information to put on it? ( Sheriff details and photos , Logo, an enlarged laminated WOW badge – could show all of them for the year, Dazzle, Cycle Count, Walk to School Month, Monthly class winner for walking/cycling to school. Road safety information such as be safe and be seen. Prizes etc. Could put up children’s artwork or competition results. Children will need to identify a suitable place/board where it can be seen by everyone. Where the best place to put it in the school?
9
Three examples of notice boards.
First one has a Road Safety Theme It contains information about walking campaigns and has examples of children’s artwork. They have created their own ASTARS Logo

Assemblies The 4 p’s Permission Practise Prepare Plan Key points
Always ask permission from your A*STARS School Co-ordinators, Teacher or Head Teacher. They will be able to identify a suitable date and may be able to help you with additional supporting materials e.g. music etc. Plan: Think about your assembly in detail. Decide what you are going to talk about - look at your year planner to give you some ideas for each month. Decide what you want to tell everyone and think of the best way of getting your ideas across. Should you use a DVD, a poem, do a role play, include a song or a power point presentation? Prepare: Make sure that you have enough time to prepare for your assembly. Do you need to make anything, or include props or posters? Don’t forget to ask for help if you need it. Think of ways of getting your audience involved and keeping their attention. You might want to ask questions or use the assembly to talk about competitions or give out prizes and certificates. Practice: Remember that practice makes perfect and this will be true for your assembly too! Practice what you’re going to say in front of the other sheriffs or your family or friends. Speak clearly, loudly and slowly during your talk. The most important part is to have fun and enjoy what you’re doing.
11
Competitions Plan ahead & keep it simple
How are you going to tell everyone Set a closing date & select winner Announce winners and prizes 5mins Pick topic, type of competition, poster, poem, story – work with co-ordinator Keep it simple – who is aimed at - consider KS1/KS2- are they able to do it How can you tell everyone – notice board, assembly, website, poster, newsletter, word of mouth Make sure everyone knows date, have a collection box outside the hall/office etc Judge winner with an adult/co-ordinator What prizes, ask us to help, award in an assembly and explain why they won. We have a certificate that they can use
12
Sheriff’s Tasks We have created a template to help you plan your tasks throughout the year. The idea is to do one or two things every half term (6 weeks). We have put in some of the key events and activities into the planner for you. (You will find a hard copy of this on your table as well as on the website.)

Walking Or Wheeling- WOW
Not all schools doing this. Existing A*STARS schools are starting it at the end of September. There are 6 badges per year – one per half term. Children have to walk on average 3 times per week. This is how they record their journey – explain how they used wall charts before but now it will be electronically recorded. Go though the icons names etc
14
Walking Challenge Aimed at children who are unable to use an A*STARS mode of travel e.g. attending Breakfast club etc. Sheriffs identify children and see if they want to take part, measure the playground to see how many laps equal one mile, Advertise and plan a rota to see who will lead it each time. Show the high vis jackets they can wear to do this. Children walk once or twice a week Sheriffs sign off their sheet. They receive certificates for 6, 12 and 18 miles
