Without caring about who saw them, the blithe teenagers gossiped and giggled as they walked down the street.

The waitress was congenial and smiling, even though the restaurant was very busy.

5 4. Defiant Openly or boldly resisting authority (adjective)
The student was sent to the principal’s office for being defiant to the teacher.

Having little or no life or plants; barren (adjective) The girl felt desolate after her three best friends moved away.

7 6. Despondent In low spirits; depressed; dejected (adjective)
Charlie Gordon became despondent when he realized he would lose his intelligence.

The disgruntled workers went on strike when their pay was cut.
