Pertussis Update

California Pertussis Cases – 2010
8,383 cases reported in 2010. State rate of 21.4/100,000. 559 new cases have been reported to CDPH since December 15, 2010. This is the most cases reported in 63 years when 9,394 cases were reported in 1947, a peak year, and the highest incidence in 52 years when a rate of 26.0 cases/100,000 was reported in Previously, the peak was in 2005 when there were 3,182 cases reported.

Maxim Tdap Clinics Fully executed contract now in place
Send clinic requests to Nisha Gandhi Clinics should target household contacts of infants Approximately 54,000 doses remain on the contract Update on clinic/shot count: 1578 doses administered 14 clinics scheduled (Dec-Jan)
10
CDC Vaccine Efficacy Assessment
Progress on the assessment continues. To date records for 1,000 cases and 3,000 controls have been extracted. A big thank you to the 15 counties that have been participating!
11
School Based Tdap Vaccination Clinics
Have VFC vaccine to support clinics. We do not have sufficient 317 doses to provide to school-based clinics. Issuing guidance document. Also will request information on clinics via a spreadsheet prior to confirming VFC order. Schools will need to work with LHDs to order vaccine unless they are direct VFC providers. Schools should be aware of VFC requirements and timeline to become VFC provider.
12
School Based Tdap Vaccination Clinics
Will send out a survey to LHDs to determine who will be partnering with schools on clinics. Will work with LHDs to estimate need to ensure that CDC has enough inventory on hand to fulfill orders.
13
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
There is no exception to AB354. However, LHDs should make special effort to immunize these children if they are due for Tdap.
14
LHD Role Prepare now for summer/fall crunch time.
Look at vacation schedules, clinic hours. Be prepared for additional children to show up close to school admission time. Between now and this summer, continue to work with private providers to try and get as many children into their medical home as possible.

AB 354 Education School Letter Template School Script Template
Provider Script Template All these newly developed materials are to help schools and providers to encourage parents to get their kids vaccinated now. These materials are all available on EZIZ.org and will also be on the new school website: shotsforschool.org later this week.
16
ShotsForSchool.org! Here’s a teaser for the ShotsForSchool.org website. This website is intended for schools, parents and providers to get information and resources on California’s school requirements. We anticipate that the website will go live by the end of the week.

Blue Card Sticker 3M to LHDs 12/30/10- Sticker Instructions
# of sheets vs. stickers Sticker Instructions PDF to LHDs 1/10 Posted on websites IzCoordinators Shots For School CAIR version live since 12/10 (SD, Central, Imperial?) School Information Systems RFI 18

CAIR Blue Card -- No Sticker Needed!
If student vaccine records are in the CAIR system, a blue card with the sticker format can be generated; so for example if a student already has a CAIR generated blue card, you should not manually affix a sticker but rather generate a new copy that demonstrates the sticker. The CAIR blue card may also be submitted by the parent to the school if the card has been generated by the physicians office or clinic site. If the student has completed the required Tdap dose, the computer generated card sticker section will automatically fill-in on the left hand side. The school staff will sign, date and file the blue card in the cumulative record or health file. Please note again that the CAIR generated sticker formats will not repeat the name or birthdate as this is redundant in a computer system.
20
Personal Beliefs Exemption Form
Shipping PBE forms separately to LHDs in next weeks Instructions via pdf and weblinks Please coordinate distribution of sticker sheets, PBE forms with Local school districts Private schools Parents may request a Personal Beliefs Exemption (PBE). This is their right by law. A PBE is not intended to be used because of failure to obtain the vaccine in a timely manner. This new form is provided because it gives parents more detail about the pertussis disease and school exclusion. The parent should request a PBE and sign and date the form. The exemption is then noted on the sticker.
