Plate Tectonics Plate Tectonics
2
What is plate tectonics?
Earth’s lithospheric plates moving around on top of the asthenosphere.
4
What causes the motion of the plates?
Convection- the motion of the convecting mantle.
5
What causes the motion of the plates?
The creation of new crust and the destruction of old crust.
6
What is continental drift?
The theory that states the continents “drifted” apart in the past. Pangaea- “super continent.”
8
What is continental drift?
Theory developed by Alfred Wegner. The continents are “drifting” now.
9
What evidence supports continental drift?
The continents fit together like puzzle pieces.
10
What evidence supports continental drift?
The same fossils are found on opposing coastlines.
11
What evidence supports continental drift?
The Earth’s magnetic field causes iron within cooling rocks to point to magnetic north. Looking at the grains shows original placement of crust.
