Ch. 6 Momentum and Impulse

Conservation of Momentum – the total momentum of all objects interacting with one another remains constant regardless of the nature between the objects p1i + p2i = p1f + p2f 1st object nd object st object nd object initial initial final final momentum momentum momentum momentum m1v1i + m2v2i = m1v1f + m2v2f

If both objects are moving together, then you can factor out the velocities
m1v1i + m2v2i = (m1 + m2) vf or vi (m1 + m2) = m1v1f + m2v2f

A 76 kg boater initially at rest in a 45 kg stationary boat steps out of the boat onto the dock. If the boater moves out of the boat with a velocity of 2.5 m/s to the right, what is the final velocity of the boat?
