2 What is Health Information Professionals Week?
The week of March 24-30, 2019 represents our 30th consecutive year in celebrating our profession This celebratory week recognizes and helps raise awareness of the Health Information Management (HIM®) profession across Canada CHIMA invites all healthcare professionals to join in the celebration and to help raise awareness of the important role the HIM® profession plays in providing quality care to Canadians Help raise awareness of the HIM® profession by participating in HIP Week and using #HIPWeek19 in your social posts!

The HIM® profession plays a vital role in providing quality care to Canadians! Health information is more than just data It’s a shared language connecting front line caregivers to people It’s a language for telling the health stories of Canadians, stories that help Canadians trust in the care they receive

4 The Canadian Health Information Management Association and College
The Canadian Health Information Management Association represents over 5000 HIM® professionals across Canada The Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM) is the registering and regulatory body for HIM® practice in Canada We are committed to advocating for the critical role our the HIM® profession plays, both at the national and regional levels across Canada We are proud of our 75+ year history and believe that the best days for the HIM® profession lie ahead Our strategic plan charts a new course for the HIM® profession shaping the path to propel our profession forward into new opportunities

5 Our Chapters We have 8 chapters across Canada representing HIM® professionals at their local and regional levels Our chapters offer the opportunity for community building, engagement and learning for the HIM® profession

We lead efforts to ensure the availability, accuracy, integrity, and security of all data related to patient healthcare encounters Our voice is critical in providing quality care to Canadians and making the best use of available resources to support sound clinical and business decisions HIM® encompasses a wide scope of practice with an ever-increasing number of roles each drawing from the core skill sets learned in an accredited HIM® program From its roots in managing health records in a hospital, the HIM® career path spans many types of organizations and diverse roles

7 What do HIM® Professionals do?
HIM® professionals are the only certified experts in the science and technology of health information management Our key role is to maintain the integrity and confidentiality of personal health information within our four Domains of Practice Electronic Health Information Management (e-HIM®) Data Quality Privacy Health Information Management standards Additional domain areas HIM® professionals represent include: Information Analysis & Informatics Process and System Design Information Governance Classification and Coding

8 HIM® Professionals are Employed Across the Continuum of Care
HIM® professionals work in a variety of different settings including: Acute care, Primary care, Community care, Long- term care, Mental Health, etc. HIM® professionals often have roles that bridge silos and connect clinical, analytics and technology functions Certified/skilled HIM® professionals ensure healthcare organizations have the right information when and where it is needed while maintaining high standards of data integrity, confidentiality and security HIM® professionals assist the health system (from consumer to researchers) in managing access to data: who can see what, when, and under what circumstances
