He is an author of five books, including Start With Why and Leaders Eat Last, motivational speaker and organisational consultant. Link to Harvard Business Publishing's research report

5 Leadership and learning during a transformation is no easy task
Leadership and learning during a transformation is no easy task. It takes consistency and variety…for an extended period of time.

6 Thank you! Bethell-Anne Osborne and Marie Raines of UT-Dallas

7 Introductions Introductions Your name and role
Your organization and one line on what it does The date is December 31, Tell us one accomplishment you are proud of achieving this year Introductions As part of our introductions, I want you to do a little time traveling with me. May I ask each roundtable member to stand when it is your turn and share with us the following: Your name and role Your organization and one line on what your organization does And then time travel with me. Pretend is is December 31, Tell is one accomplishment you are so proud of doing this year. Your ONE THING may be as small or big as you want. It can be professional or personal. It can be a new habit you started or changed. It can be that you rolled out or updated the leadership development program at your company.

8 Why Leadership & Learning Matters (from Harvard Business Publishing 2018)
HB Publishing publishes its research every two years. Transformation is the new normal Varied demands from your stakeholders What to focus on and when

11 Under pressure What pressures do you see L&D facing as you focus on meeting your organization's transformation imperative?

12 Under pressure – our top 3
Managing virtual teams (from across campus to across the globe) effectively Try incorporating video technology more frequently The demand for more personalized learning that is easy for learners to access and use Ask learners what their go-to knowledge sources are and why. Incorporate and scale their ideas and options where possible Need for speed – “I need to learn _______ NOW.” Seek out and learn from others who have proven success in addressing urgency, e.g., apply Agile’s MVP approach (Minimally Viable Product) to learning solutions

13 Hit...or miss? How do you see Leadership Development driving results or missing the mark?

14 Hit...or miss? Driving results Missing the mark
Incorporating Leadership Development activities into established business update / strategy sessions Drawing a clear line of sight between how each person’s role aligns with the company’s mission Hosting regular leadership updates with staff, and using interactive technologies for polling and Q&A (e.g., menti.com and sli.do) to encourage engagement and transparency Missing the mark Teaching the business to involve L&D at the right time (we’re often called in too late) Identifying measures that matter to the business Providing person-centered, succinct messaging and learning

15 Impact Do you agree that the three focus areas noted for L&D to drive transformation are the most impactful? Are there other focus areas you've found to be successful?

16 Impact Build organizational agility
More visible role modeling successful behaviors Rolling out MVP more broadly Re-purpose existing learning materials Deliver learner-focused programs Storytelling Reverse mentoring Millennial panels Expand the definition of partnership More talent mobility Being flexible on role definitions as you partner with other groups in the business

17 What else is on your mind?

18 Call to Action What did you learn today that… …surprised you?
…inspired you? …you can do in your office tomorrow? Started with water and are ending with fire. What ignited your fire today?
