God Is Not A Man Numbers 23:19
3
The Text And Its Setting
Israel encounters Balak, king of the Moabites (Num. 22:4) Balak has an idea He chooses not to fight against Israel He hires Balaam to curse Israel (Num. 22:5-8) Balak’s mistake was underestimating God His plans, vis a vis Balaam, were thwarted again and again Balaam, finally, did realize Balak’s futility God cannot be bought off or used (Num. 23:19)
4
It is the timeless lesson of Isaiah 55:8-9
It is not just a lesson for Balak and Balaam This is a lesson that we need to learn as well
5
Examples Adam and Eve thought they could hide from God (Gen. 3:8)
“You thought that I was altogether like you” (Psa. 50:21b) The whole premise of idolatry is to make God like man (Acts 17:29)
6
Proof Offered By Forgiveness
Man differs from God Man wants in on vengeance and judgment (Heb. 10:30) Man has a problem with forgiving Man wants to keep sins “dangling before him” Of others (Matt. 18:21-22) Of his own (Psa. 51:3) God “remembers no more” and casts sin “behind His back” (Isa. 38:17) We make God like us when we say, “God cannot forgive me” Only God could bring forgiveness (2 Cor. 9:15)
