5. Let me introduce you to richard
A once successful hospitality management professional, the army veteran had suffered from depression for nearly all of his adult life. Now, the illness had depleted his body and mind to the point where he was no longer able to work. Without health insurance or access to affordable mental health services, Richard struggled to make ends meet for as long as possible before giving up his apartment. With no clear plan in place, he found a safe place to park his car at the parking lot of a church in High Point, North Carolina. After a couple of weeks, the priest at the church approached Richard to ask about his situation. By that point it was early January and Richard was suffering from frostbite. The priest got Richard to the hospital and eventually Richard landed in a local men’s shelter. After several months, a chance encounter with a Veterans Administration representative at the shelter resulted in Richard being referred to The Servant Center’s Servant House transitional housing program. Richard received his associates degree in Biology from GTCC during his time here, and is now enrolled full time at UNCG studying environmental engineering.

Provides permanent housing for 17 low-income disabled individuals
10 of the units are exclusively for veterans

12. AmeriCorps Partnership to End Homelessness
Program dedicated to alleviating homelessness and hunger in Guilford County with a focus on serving Veterans
Members work within 10 nonprofit agencies in Guilford County
Services provided to Guilford County homeless include:
Emergency financial assistance

Life skills coaching
Employment counseling
Volunteer management
Case management

Participated in 10 service projects including Crop Walk, Turkey Give-Away and Stand Down
Veterans are a primary focus area
Provided services to 451 veterans
Gave groceries to those who are food insecure on 20,000 occasions

14. UNCG Veterans and The Servant Center
