1 2019-2020 Senior Year Course Selection Meeting
Hello Class of 2020! Mrs. Sabens here!! It’s time to discuss your SENIOR year course selections! A copy of this presentation will be sent to your today and posted to the Class of 2020 webpage. Prepared for the Class of 2020 By: Mrs. Sabens, School Counselor This is it!

2 Graduation Requirements
English– 4 credits American History – 1 credit (junior year) American Government/Civics – 1 credit (Senior year) Mathematics – 3 credits (including Algebra 1 & Geometry content) Consumer Education – ½ credit (Personal Finance, Adult Living, Resource Management) Health – ½ credit PE – You must be enrolled every year, unless you have a waiver Elective – 1 credit Total credits – 19 Achievement Exam – SAT (April 9) First thing: Are you on track to graduate? Use this checklist and the transcript you picked up from me during lunch last week to see if you are on track. Next year you must have at least English, Government & Civics and PE in your schedule, unless you have a waiver for PE. Remember to build your schedule wisely based on your plans for after graduation, if you are planning to go to college, your schedule should include English, Math and a Science course. CCHS Graduation Requirements do not reflect college admissions requirements. Do not assume that meeting graduation requirements equals college entrance. 4 Course Selection Timeline
February – May Academic Review appointments will continue Contact Mrs. Sabens for any changes to your requests BEFORE May 10, 2019 B202 Lab Meetings with Mrs. Sabens– January 28-February 1 We will meet during your English class Finalize course selections with Mrs. Sabens Class Meeting -- January 22, 2019 Receive course selection sheet Review & discuss questions This is our course selection timeline. Today you are receiving your Senior Course Selection sheet, your course options are on the back. You have a lot more options for English this year, discuss these options with your current English teacher and be sure you select the right fit for you. Please work on completing this form BY January28th. I will review your completed course selection sheets when I meet with you during the week of January 28th, and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to stop by to see me during ARP before then if you want to talk through your options. If you want to complete your form and drop it off to me to keep, I would be happy to keep it for you. Schedules will be released for your review and preparation at least 1 week before school starts.

5 What will you choose? Required Classes
English 4, Government/Civics, PE or Band (or PE waiver for sports) Required Classes MATH, SCIENCE, Consumer Ed, World Language, Art, Career & Tech, Social Studies, JALC Dual Credit, Early Bird, other Electives You will note your top alternative classes in case of scheduling conflicts Alternatives College-bound? Make sure your senior year course selections meet the entrance requirements for your prospective colleges! As you complete your Senior Course Selection Forms, here are a few things to keep in mind. ALL Seniors will be placed in English 4, Government/Civics, and PE (unless you have a PE waiver). The rest of your courses are up to you. Pick a math and science course based on your career aspirations, use Naviance to help you make that selection. Then select your remaining electives, also based upon your career aspirations. You may also consider taking an EB course. You will also need to select 2 alternate courses, these options are necessary in the event that a scheduling conflict occurs and we cannot register you for your listed electives. Again, I will review your completed course selection sheets when I meet with you during your English classes, and answer any questions you may have. If you are college-bound, YOU are responsible for making sure your course selections meet the admissions requirements for your perspective colleges. 6 Honors Information & General Course Sequences
Honors courses require an application – be sure you are meeting deadlines if you are pursuing honors placement. Talk to your teachers! IAG 3 Essentials for College Algebra OR Algebra 2 Algebra 2 Trigonometry OR Stats/Contemporary Math* Honors Algebra 2 Honors Pre-Calculus Honors AP Calculus OR Stats/Contemporary Math* Science Choose a course that aligns with your post-secondary plans PE Pick one Just for your records, here are our general course sequences. When we meet, I will know if you have been approved for an honors course. *Stats & Contemporary Math are Dual Credit Classes! I will have core course recommendations for you when we meet.

7 English Courses Options
English 4 (1 semester or full year) Honors English 4 (full year) Creative Writing (1 semester) Journalism (1 semester) Shakespeare (1 semester) Tech English* (1 semester) *Denotes Dual Credit Course Senior year more English options open up to you. Take a minute to write which options you would like for next year on your form now, be sure to note which courses are only one semester.

8 Dual Credit Information
Dual Credit courses require a Registration Sheet & test scores– be sure you meet all of the requirements by the posted deadlines or you will not be able to enroll in a Dual Credit course. Steps to enroll in a Dual Credit Course Indicate the course on your Course Selection Sheet Complete the JALC Dual Credit Registration Form Take the Accuplacer Exam at JALC or onsite at CCHS (Test Dates: April 29 & 30) Some Dual Credit Course Options Ceramics Intro to Statistics (SM1)/Contemporary Math (SM2) Honors AP Environmental Science English 4 Tech English (semester course) CNA (2 periods) Medical Terminology Electrical Trades German 3 (or Honors German 3) German 4 (or Honors German 4) Spanish 3 (or Honors Spanish 3) Spanish 4 (or Honors or AP Spanish 4) Sign Language Auto Courses Welding Courses Dual Credit classes are classes which have been approved for both high school and college credit. These classes are taught here at CCHS. Students also have the opportunity to take Dual Enrollment classes, like Welding, Automotive and Sign Language, etc., online or on the JALC campus. Follow the “Steps to Enroll” on this slide to enroll in a Dual Credit or Dual Enrollment course. See me if you have questions about dual credit. 9 **You will create a resume in any Consumer Ed course you take**
Considerations Choose wisely; maintain balance & give yourself grace to sleep, study & maintain extra-curricular activities Remember to request your Consumer Education requirement this year if you haven’t already. Pick from one of the following classes: Personal Finance (adds a unit on the role of the government & economics) Adult Living (adds a unit on relationships, you do not have to carry the baby ) Resource Management (goes more in depth on career exploration) **You will create a resume in any Consumer Ed course you take** Any failed required junior course(s) will be built into your senior year schedule. Just a few things to consider…If you haven’t completed your Consumer Education Requirement yet—don’t forget to add it to your senior year schedule. Remember: Any required course that you fail this year will be built into your senior year schedule---YES, you will be in classes with juniors next year if you don’t utilize your credit recovery options now

10 Other Opportunities Seniors are eligible for OJT, TA, CNA and CEO.
Applications for all of these options will be available in the lab when we meet. OJT (On the Job Training): See Ms. McGee You will have Interrelated Coop 4th hour & go to work 5th & 6th hour It is wise to have a job before you apply for this course TA (Teacher’s Assistant): 1 period, no credit CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant): See Ms. Nelson Attendance is very important for this course 2 periods, 1 semester, 1 credit CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities): See Ms. Koester EB and 1st hour (2 periods, 2 credits) If you are interested in Business, this is a great opportunity for you to explore Attend the CEO Information meeting to learn more, watch the announcements for a date/time Here are a few additional opportunities that become available to you senior year. I will have applications for all of these options when we meet in the lab. You can also talk to the contact for each opportunity if you have questions before we meet. OJT- On the Job training, see Ms. McGee if you have questions TA- talk to the teacher you would like to TA for CNA- talk to Ms. Nelson if you have questions, please note, excellent attendance is required for this course CEO- Plan to attend the informational meeting, watch the announcements for details

Check your school at least once per week Check your grades at least once per week Be Here-Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Involved and Be Responsible Ask questions Be YOU, Be well, and Set your Sights on Success! Be familiar with the Class of 2020 webpage This is it! This is the last high school schedule you will ever build, make it meaningful. Also remember, THIS year isn’t over yet!! Be here, be ready, be respectful, be involved, and be responsible. The cumulative GPA you earn at the end of this year, is the GPA you will apply to college with. Finish strong. Make sure you are familiar with the Class of 2020 webpage, and signed up for the Class of 2020 Remind group. Check your & your grades at least once a week.
