Properties of Life 1.1 AP Biology Mini Lecture
2
Biology—the scientific study of living things
“Living things”—All the diverse organisms descended from a single-celled ancestor (a single common ancestor) All organisms come from 3 Domains Archaea – special living bacteria Bacteria – regular normal everyday bacteria Eukarya – all eukaryotes (Protists, Fungi, Plants and Animals)
3
Characteristics of Life – for all organisms for all domains
Order - all life have common chemical components (DNA etc.) and a cell Energy Processing - metabolism, cellular respiration Homeostasis - regulate internal environment Response to the environment - respond to stimulus Reproduction - replicate genetic information Growth and Development - grow into adults, cellular specialization Evolutionary Adaptation- change due to environment and gradual changes in genes
5
Chloroplasts and Mitochondria
Endosymbiotic Theory It holds that the organelles evolved from symbiosis of individual single-celled prokaryotes are thought to represent formerly free-living prokaryotes One piece of evidence is that both organelles have their own DNA! Video
