BEFORE YOU START Who are you designing for? What’s the purpose?
What’s the message you’re trying to convey? Before you start: 3 questions: - Who - What is the purpose - What is the message

WHO ARE YOU DESIGNING FOR?
DATA CONSUMER Novice/Generalist First exposure to the subject Doesn’t want oversimplification Aware of the topic Looking for an overview understanding and major themes DATA EXPLORER Managerial In-depth Actionable Understanding of topic and detail Gets concepts and relationships DATA ANALYST Expert Discovery with great detail First, To whom are you communicating? This can help you to identify common ground that will help you ensure they hear your message. Second, What do you want your audience to know or do? You should be clear how you want your audience to act and take into account how you will communicate to them and the overall tone that you want to set for your communication. WHAT’S THE PURPOSE Communicate to an Individual or a Group
Communicate specific or generic information Provide a starting point Discovery Presentation in person or standalone Trying to communicate to too many different people with disparate needs at once, you put yourself in a position where you can’t communicate to any one of them as effectively as you could if you narrowed your target audience. Sometimes this means creating different communications for different audiences. What do you need your audience to know or do? What background information is relevant or essential? Who is the audience or decision maker? What do we know about them? What biases does our audience have that might make them supportive of or resistant to our message? What data is available that would strengthen our case? Is our audience familiar with this data, or is it new? What would a successful outcome look like? If you only had a limited amount of time or a single sentence to tell your audience what they need to know, what would you say?

Monitor and enable action to be taken as quickly as possible
WHAT MESSAGE IS BEING CONVEYED OPERATIONAL Monitor and enable action to be taken as quickly as possible STRATEGIC KPIs provide the executive team with high-level overview of the state of the business ANALYTICAL Offer interactivity drill-down functionality, allowing the user to explore more of the data and get different insights ‘Does the CFO really need to know the servers are operating at 95% capacity?’ Think about the audience for the dashboard. The most effective dashboards target a single type of user and just display data specific to that ‘use case’. This step is often overlooked, leading to a dashboard that contains an overwhelming mix of data – some of which is relevant to one audience and confusing to another Operational - Think of an operational dashboard as monitoring the nerve centre of your business. Operational dashboards often require real-time or near real-time data to highlight issues or opportunities as they happen, and enable action to be taken as quickly as possible. Strategic / Executive - Strategic dashboards will typically provide the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that company executive teams track on a periodic (daily, weekly or monthly) basis. A strategic dashboard should provide the executive team with a high-level overview of the state of the business together with the opportunities the business faces. Analytical - this type of dashboard will offer drill-down functionality, allowing the user to explore more of the data and get different insights.

The Right Tool When to use a dashboard vs when to use a report

REPORTING Static Reports Interactive Reports Personalized Reports
Pixel-perfect, authored for a purpose Interactive Reports Starting Point for exploration Personalized Reports Completely custom report, built by me and for me 1. Static Reports: A financial report which is a good example of the type of content that should be read only, centrally authored and tightly managed. Many users will want to consume this content but only a select few would author it. 2. Interactive Reports: centrally authored, yet interactive, report that show sales growth. There is the desire to filter the report, do groupings etc. to gain better insight into performance of different products, maybe in different regions. The interactivity level is set by the author. 3. Personalized Reports. By clicking on the pencil in the top menu bar the user can edit the report - perhaps to add in other insights etc. The last click on the slide shows how the user can subscribe to this report with it personalized to how and when they want.
