1 Do Now: 2/25/16 HW: Meet in computer lab tomorrow.
Complete the Density Practice handout. Current Events # 9-12 tomorrow. Bring in Candy/Health Bar for lab Tuesday. Do Now: /25/16 Take out the Law of Conservation of Matter lab Take out your “Measuring Matter” HW Watch Tim and Moby explain the Law of Conservation of Matter and fill out the worksheet

2 Law of Conservation BrainPop
No No Reactant Product Mass Equal Mass No 4g +32g = 36g

3 20g – 5g = 15g

4 Law of Conservation Lab
Take out the lab from yesterday- pages 3-5 We will be going over/completing the questions now

5 Measuring Matter HW

6 Definitions: Mass: the amount of matter in the object
Weight: the measurement of the effect of gravity on the mass of the object

7 The amount of matter in the object will not change no matter where you are (under water, space, on a mountain) BUT The weight of an object WILL change depending upon the amount of gravity there is at a particular place. For example: How much do you think you weigh on the different planets?? Will there be a difference? Will you weigh the same on Jupiter as you do on Pluto?

8 The amount of space the object takes up.
Volume The amount of space the object takes up. How can volume be measured? Regular solids: Formula: Length x Width x Height Units: (cm3) Irregular solids: Method: Displacement method Units: (mL or cm3 ) Liquids: Method: Use a graduated cylinder Units: (mL) What should I remember? **1 cm3 = 1 mL 1 cubic centimeter equals 1 mL of liquid!

9 Practice Problems: Complete by yourself
True or False: ______ If you went to the planet Pluto, your weight would change. ______ If gravity was to increase, mass would increase ______ Your mass is dependent upon your location in the universe ______ Volume is measured with a triple beam balance ______ Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object ______ You measure mass in mL ______ You would use the displacement method for measuring an irregular solid like a diamond. _____ Measuring volume only applies to fluids such as water T F F F T F T F

10 Answer the questions in the space provided:
1) Find the volume of the candy bar if its length is 25cm, height is 2cm and width is 2cm. (Include units!) 25 x 2 x 2 = 100cm3 2) Find the volume of the liquid in the graduated cylinders (include units!!): 3)You measured the mass of a rock and this is what you see on the triple beam balance. What is the mass of the rock? 35mL 545.2g

11 4) Which has more volume: 1000cm3 of feathers or 250mL of soda
4) Which has more volume: 1000cm3 of feathers or 250mL of soda. Explain your answer. Since cm3 and mL are the same units for volume, I can cross them out and compare the numbers. Since 1000 is larger than 250, the feathers have the higher volume.

12 Thinking question… 13.7 billion years old Using what you know about the law of conservation of matter, how old do you think the molecules that make up your body are? The universe was formed during the BIG BANG 13.7 years ago, so the molecules inside of your body have been “recycled” through chemical reactions ever since then!

13 Tonight’s Density Homework
Use your homework from last night (Measuring Matter) as a guide! *HINT: You need to use the density formula!
