What is the Deep Creek Watershed ?
Watershed: 41,000 acres vs. DC Lake: 4,000 acres >50 % = forest >50 miles of streams DC Lake Managed by MD Dept. Natural Resources (DNR) Brookfield Power (dam) Permitted by MD Dept. of Environment (MDE) (renewal in 1st Q, 2019) Deep Creek Watershed Foundation 08/18/2018

DCWF’s First Project NEED FOR WATER BUDGET
Drought conditions ~every 7 years Major water depth problems Multiple water uses Goal 12 Watershed Plan Political “Hot Potato” No State or County funding Need creative engineering Foundation formed – donations Engineering firm hired DCWF’s First Project 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation
9
GOAL DCWF’s First Project
To Develop Water Budget Model (WBM) WBM Designed to Assist MDE with Water Management during Peak Seasons (April – October) to maintain control and equity of the water resources for all stakeholders, at times of abnormal precipitation Working closely with State and Brookfield for last year Close to complete DCWF’s First Project 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation

DCWF’s Second Project Lessening Acid Load in Cherry Creek
Everhart, Glotfelty and Teets Remediation Sites All carried acid mine drainage and excess metals into Cherry Creek – Remediation (Cost $362,000) Cherry Creek Doser – 2001 (Cost $100,000 + yearly limestone & monitoring) 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation
11
Snapshot of Cherry Creek
Naturally acidic MDE created a series of treatment wetlands and a doser to help reduce the impacts of AMD These treatment sites have significantly improved the environmental status of Cherry Creek Fish populations have increased in Cherry Creek Cove Eight miles long Empties into Deep Creek Lake Name traces to the deep reddish color due to bog tannins Only stream with AMD in the Deep Creek watershed. Produces half the acidity to the Lake, ¼ due to AMD

FUNDING In Consultation with MDE Cherry Creek Doser Needed Funds
Through donations to the DCWF - Funding $10K/Year To Provide Chemicals for Cherry Creek Doser to Neutralize AMD & For Other AMD Related Costs FUNDING 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation
16
The Future of the AMD Remediation in the Watershed
The 17 year old systems need major overhauls of the valves, the alkalinity systems, and some additional clean-up and maintenance. Public Law has a sunset provision that now has some likelihood of being invoked in 2021 or the Law may have major cutbacks. AMD is still flowing, and it will continue to flow for many years. 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation

DCWF’s Third Project Studying Zebra Mussels in Deep Creek Lake
Zebra Mussels are in numerous lakes and rivers outside of the Deep Creek Watershed. This CAN threaten the dam’s intake pipes and boats on the lake. DNR, Brookfield Renewable and the Foundation are funding a study to determine if Zebra Mussels survive in DCL and, if so, what we need to do to minimize the them. This is the first time that Brookfield has worked with DNR and the lake community. 08/18/2018 Deep Creek Watershed Foundation
