1. Literal “How To Edit” Steps
Just to get you headed in the right direction

2. Editing Project Standards
Each group with 4 or more members must have 2 (two) editors each working on separate machines; they will hand in two (2) separate and slightly different projects.
One

So it will be necessary to COPY the raw footage from one computer to another.

3. Editing Project Standards
Editing is the only time where the group may not get the same grades on a daily basis.
If the editors are editing, and the rest of the group is not there, the students who are not present may get a lower grade since they are not around to potentially help out.

4. “How To Edit” Legend
Clk or “click-on” = double – click (or a “normal” click, right?)
S-click = single – click
R-click = right – click (a single right click, right?)
Series of “click-on” steps will be shown like this:
SD card>private>AVCHD>BDMV>stream> YAY
Where “YAY” is the destination.
The destination is the resulting place where you would either get or put something.
Don’t worry about ALL CAPS unless instructed.
Ctrl-___ = hold down the “control” button and while it is down, click whatever letter is after the hyphen (minus sign [-])

5. “How To Edit” Legend
If something is in quotes (“”) type it EXACTLY in order to alleviate confusion.
If asked to name something with a “___” fill in the blank with the appropriate information (names, dates, etc)
Ex: “20__” would be whatever year it is: 2020
Ex: “_____ (Prod Co)” would be your production company name.

6. Part I: Putting Footage into the Computer
GENERAL RULE: DO NOT EDIT OFF YOUR SD CARD!
If you do, when you remove the SD card your clips will vanish!
Put your footage INTO THE COMPUTER and then REMOVE THE SD CARD!
We will first create two folders into which you will drag and drop your footage from your SD card into a Raw Footage Folder.
First, we need to create a Raw Footage Folder if one is not created already.
Inside that folder, we will create a Period Folder, a folder for your Production Company, a folder for the project you’re working on, and folders for each day you film.

7. Part Ia: Create a Raw Footage Folder
If a “20__-20__ Raw Footage” folder is not on the desktop:
R-click on the desktop>New>Folder
S-click folder
Name the folder “20__-20__ Raw Footage”
Inside that folder create another folder:
Click on 20__-20__ Raw Footage folder
R-click inside Raw Footage>folder>New>Folder
Name the folder “Period __”

8. Part Ia: Create a Raw Footage Folder
Inside that folder create another folder:
Click on the Period __ folder
R-click on the Period __>New>Folder
S-click folder
Name the folder “______” (Project Name)
Click on the “___” (Project Name) folder
R-click inside “___” Project Name>folder>New>Folder
Name the folder “_____” (Today’s date) (…or Cam1 or
however you want to differentiate your daily filming).
THIS IS THE FOLDER FOR THIS RAW FOOTAGE!

9. Part Ia: Create a Raw Footage Folder
This is what the folder should look like, with the list of previous folder names along the top.
Everything starts with the Desktop! (even though you may not see it in the list, that’s where you start looking for your footage!)
Drag and drop this folder to the right of your desktop.
Size it smaller so you can work.

10. Part Ib: Accessing your SD or USB
Put your SD Card into the slot in the back left of the computer (USB back right)
Reach around the base, don’t stick your arm between the base and the screen
You’ll end up with a screen that may look like this.
You’ll wonder where your SD card footage is.
Click on “This PC.”
You’ll get a screen that looks like this…

Move the SD card window to the left of the Raw Footage window so you can work.

S-click ANY ONE file in the SD card to highlight it in blue.

Crtl-a (select all) – this selects all your clips. If you don’t want all, select the ones you want.

Before we do this, let’s ask some questions:
Do you need to keep the files on the SD card?
If you need the second editor to get them (or some other reason), then yes, they need to stay!
If you are the second editor, and no one else needs the files, then they may be able to go away.
This is an important question because when you r-click and drag you are given the option to either MOVE the files or COPY the files.
If you need the files on the SD card, COPY the files.
If they are no longer necessary, MOVE the files.

R-click, hold it, and slowly drrraaaaaag from SD card to Raw Footage folder.

When you release the r-click, you are given a choice: COPY or MOVE?

If you need the files to stay on the SD card, choose COPY. The files will copy to the folder.

If it is a good time to clean out your SD card, choose MOVE and the files will MOVE, not copy.

So, now, your raw footage files are located in the folder you created.
If you film again, create another folder with another date and put new stuff in there.
Keep different days’ filming in different folders so the file numbers do not repeat.
You don’t want three 0000 files in your folder.
Trust.

24. Part Id: Removing the SD Card
REMOVE THE SD CARD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
