1 Bell ringers Feb. 4-8 Honors/DE

2 BR #1: Monday, Feb. 4 Describe 2 British prime ministers and acts that they passed while in office. Did you know: The celebration of Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976.

3 BR #2: Friday, Feb. 8 Define imperialism. Explain the Opium wars. (why did they happen, who was involved, what was the outcome) Did you know: Before he was a blockbuster actor, Will Smith was The Fresh Prince and, along with partner Jazzy Jeff, won the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance. They boycotted the awards because the category was barred from television.

4 Describe the scramble for Africa.
BR #3: Monday, Feb. 11 Describe the scramble for Africa. Did you know: Liberia was founded and colonized by expatriates. The West African country is one of two sovereign states in the world started as a colony for ex-slaves and marginalized Black people. Sierra Leone is the other.

5 Describe imperialism in Asia.
BR #4: Tuesday, Feb 12 Describe imperialism in Asia. Did you know: Today, the NAACP marks its 110th anniversary. Spurred by growing racial violence in the early twentieth century, and particularly by 1908 race riots in Springfield, Illinois, a group of African-American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). February 12, 1909, was chosen because it was the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

BR #5: Wednesday, Feb. 13 What was the cult of science? Describe new physics and two of the new physicists. Explain how Freud’s ideas led to rationalism. Did you know: One in four cowboys was black, despite the stories told in popular books and movies. In fact, it's believed that the real “Lone Ranger” was inspired by an African American man named Bass Reeves. Reeves had been born a slave but escaped West during the Civil War where he lived in what was then known as Indian Territory. He eventually became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, was a master of disguise, an expert marksman, had a Native American companion, and rode a silver horse.

7 BR #6: Thursday, Feb 14 List 3 new inventions from the 2nd industrial revolution, rank them and explain your ranking for Each. Did you know: In 1739, the Stono Rebellion in South Carolina became the largest slave revolt in colonial America — some of the men who participated had been soldiers in Africa before being sold into slavery.

8 No bell ringer, Friday, Feb. 15
Did you know: The media made the Black Panthers notorious for their Afros, dark apparel, and willingness for armed self-defense, but their manifesto for change launched programs that benefited Black communities nationwide, like free dental care, breakfast for low-income children, even drama classes.
