5 Did you know? The High Street and Peascod Street mark the crossing route of two ancient roads, going back at least to Saxon times Like many Mediaeval towns, Windsor was planned from the outset, with most of our main streets set down by 1300 In the 16th century, Windsor was a popular destination for religious pilgrims. This established its orientation towards tourism The greatest spur to Windsor’s development was the arrival of the railways in 1851.

12 Plan history This plan shows Windsor in There were slums by the castle wall and buildings on the Long Walk. A good plan doesn’t just enable change, it improves conservation. In this case, it protected Windsor from the uncontrolled development that befell so many other towns west of London Many of Windsor’s most cherished buildings, streets, stations and views didn’t happen by accident but were a result of this plan
