2 When You Are Finished Check it over, put it on the back table.
Copy the definition for Shi Huangdi from page 149: Read page 149. Respond in your DO NOW: Why was Shi Huangdi buried with a terra-cotta army? Grab an activity sheet from the ELMO. Read the directions #1 only. Read page 150 about the first emperor of China. Write down the first 4 accomplishments from the white board, and start completing the “purpose” and “impact” of those accomplishments.

4 China’s 1st Emperor For the next two days we will be learning about China’s first emperor, Shi Huangdi. He ruled the Qin people. Because Qin is sometimes spelled Ch’in, the name China comes from the Qin dynasty.

5 Activity for Today Then, you will start on a biography for Shi Huangdi. In the biography, write about who Shi Huangdi was and about his accomplishments. With your group, read page 150 about China’s first emperor. As you read, record his 4 major accomplishments. Make sure you explain why each accomplishment was created by Shi Huangdi.

1. United China: extended rule over large area 2. Started Great Wall: to defend China from nomads; took ten years to build 3. Built roads: helped his armies rush to put down any revolts 4. Divided China into districts: each run by a trusted official

Shi Huangdi Tomb Questions Copy the definition for currency from page 149. Take out your Shi Huangdi work from yesterday. Make sure all the notes for #1-4 are done.

When Shi Huangdi became emperor, he unified the government. He also wanted the different peoples of his kingdom to have one economy and one culture.

10 Activity for Today Focus on what he did to create one, united, Chinese nation. When you are done let me know  With your group, read page 151 about China’s first emperor. As you read, record his major accomplishments. Make sure you explain why each accomplishment was created by Shi Huangdi and important details.

SHI HUANGDI questions Share your “questions” with your group members. Which question(s) would you most like to ask a farmer or archeologist?

16 Good ruler? Bad ruler? As you have learned, the first emperor of the Qin dynasty made many changes to his new empire. In creating these accomplishments, he was able to do a lot of good. However, he also did things that were harmful. Look back to your biography on Shi Huangdi and examine the EIGHT accomplishments he did throughout his reign. On the scale, write each action on the side you think is appropriate. Flip over -> create a BEFORE and AFTER picture.

18 Shi Huangdi Next: You have probably seen “before” and “after” pictures in advertisements. You are going to make “before” and “after” pictures about China before the rule of Shi Huangdi and after. Each picture should illustrate one part of Chinese life: Show what that part of life was like BEFORE his rule Show what that part of life was like AFTER his rule Finally, on the white board, write your initials where you think Shi Huangdi is on the scale. As you have learned, the first emperor of the Qin dynasty made many changes to his new empire. In creating these accomplishments, he was able to do a lot of good. However, he also did things that were harmful. Look back to your biography on Shi Huangdi and examine the EIGHT accomplishments he did throughout his reign. On the scale, write each action on the side you think is appropriate.
