Question How can we improve the way someone learns basic arithmetic when normal teaching methods just don’t seem to be working. ICRobotics solution is….

ICeBlocks!

Summary Inventions Club eBlocks are designed to improve the way kids learn basic arithmetic, by helping them enjoy themselves when they have previously struggled. Different people learn effectively in different ways, although some kids are fine with traditional teaching methods. Kinesthetic learners need to have a tactile element to their lessons. The hands on experience of Ice blocks as well as the positive reward sounds and laughs for a correct answer is perfect learning tool for these kids. 4 4 8 Good job! *Lights up*

Solution When kids enjoy a subject they are more likely to remember the content, this type of learning has been utilised time and time again. Inventions Club eBlocks aim to revolutionize the way kids learn math by using this technique.

Innovation ICeBlocks will incorporate 1 base unit which all other smaller blocks will slot into. All of the other smaller blocks will be used as operations or numbers, these blocks will have a unique peg layout so that the base block will recognise them. Once a series of number/operation blocks have been placed on the base unit to form an equation it will determine whether or not it is correct. If the answer is correct it will reward the child with “Good Job!” and some bright green lights. However if the answer is wrong then it will sound “Bad luck try again”. Other comments could be used. ICeBlocks are better than conventional methods, as they provide a more hands-on experience for kids, especially kinesthetic learners.

Construction We know that kids won't be careful when using the ICeBlocks so we will need to make them durable enough for the classroom or home. Parts list: Small Blocks (basic construction for affordable expansion packs) Abs plastic construction Non scratchable operation/numbers printed on blocks Base Unit Plastic Case ($1.70/block) - $25.50 6 blocks with 5 pegs each: switch grid - $8.00 Basic processor $10.00 On/off switch $0.06 Piezo speaker $0.40 LEDs x $0.02 Manufacturing $5.00 Total price estimate for a base kit: $48.98 Expansion Pack(Including numbers 1-10 ) : $17.00

Existing Solutions There are already simple wooden maths blocks available for purchase…. however these are not interactive and involve a teacher or parent to be present. The electronic components also engages the child to a greater extent. The ICeBlocks are easily packed up and transported. You basically have a maths class in a box.

Implementation ICeBlocks will be available at all good educational retailers for schools, teachers, families. There will be expansion packs available if students loose blocks or get better at mathematics and require a more difficult challenge. Multiple base units will be able to attach to each other giving the student a larger work space for more complicated equations. The blocks can be utilized from grade 1 with addition and subtraction blocks. Up to grade 4 with the multiplication and division blocks. And even 5-6 for maths recovery programs. This fits in with the AusVELS maths curriculum, from level A-F and 1-4.

Sharing We have shared our research with Woorana Park primary, their FLL team Woorana Phoenix, two American FLL teams from St. Louis and Michigan, uploaded an article to our website, as well as shared our presentation to several professionals and teachers in both primary and secondary levels.
