1 October 21, 2008 Bell Work Take out your Lima Bean and Pinto Bean Graphs and put your conclusion questions on the top part of your desk (or hand in a Pink Slip!) Compare your graph to your lab partner’s graph (It should be the same!) Make corrections.

2 What did we do yesterday?
Old Business What did we do yesterday? Obj # 3: Analyze your graphs and draw conclusions from your results to answer questions about the experiment. Obj #2: Graph data to represent your results.

3 New Business Today you will learn how to:
Obj #4: Develop a conclusion statement that 1. (R)estates the problem 2. (A)nswers the problem 3. (P)roves your conclusion with analysis

4 Model Conclusion Statement
Restate the Problem The purpose is clearly restated. Includes the variable the beans were exposed to, as well as the type of beans used. 2. Answer the Problem 1.The hypothesis is stated. 2. Includes how the hypothesis was tested. 3. Tells whether the hypothesis was supported or rejected and why. 3. Prove your conclusion with data. Compare the growths of the beans in the Bag A (control) vs. the beans in Bag B (experimental). Use specific data measurement to prove how you know the hypothesis was supported or rejected.

5 Let’s Practice Together
Please take out Conclusion Rubric

6 Restate Answer Prove The purpose of the Bean Lab was to test the effect chocolate syrup (your variable) had on the growth of lima and pinto beans. The hypothesis suggested that if both the pinto and lima beans were put in chocolate syrup (variable), they would grow significantly more than the beans in water (control). Two set-ups were created to test the hypothesis. In the control set up (Bag A), a pinto and lima bean were placed in a closed zip-lock bag with 10 mL of water. In the experimental set up (Bag B), a pinto and lima bean were placed in a closed zip-lock bag with 10 mL of chocolate syrup (variable). The sprout, length, and width of the bean were recorded five days in an eight day period. The hypothesis was supported because the beans in Bag B (variable) grew more than the beans in Bag A (water). The data proves the hypothesis correct because lima bean B grew .5 cm more in length than lima bean A by Day 5. Also, pinto bean B grew almost 1 cm more in length than pinto bean A by Day 5.

7 Show me what you learned.
Homework: ***Using your conclusion rubric and Bean Lab handouts, write your conclusion statement.
