Before we get started The most noticeable geographic feature of this region is the fact that each country is an island What do you think the climate might be like? What are some economic activities take place in this region? Which of the island has the largest desert? What comes to mind when you think of island life?

Objective Each student will understand the geography of Oceania, Australia, and New Zealand by completing a graphic organizer

Oceania The first inhabitants of Oceania traveled from Southeast Asia using small rafts and canoes Over time they developed large canoes to travel longer distances

Oceania Beginning in the 1500’s Europeans began to explore Oceania. James Cook was the first to explore By the 1800’s European Missionaries arrived to convert the islanders to Christianity. European settlers started to colonize the area and sought products such as: coconuts, coffee, pineapples, and sugar

Over 40,000 years ago people from Asia migrated to Australia and New Zealand Prior to European exploration, over 500 aboriginal groups lived in this region These aboriginal groups spoke over 200 languages

Colonization The first European settler that traveled to Australia and New Zealand was Captain James Cook of Great Britain He traveled to New Zealand in 1769 and Australia in 1770 By 1788, Britain colonized Australia (called South Wales until 1820) as a penal colony This also gave Britain more pacific naval bases New Zealand was colonized by hunters and whalers from Europe, America, and Australia

Conflicts Britain had many early conflicts with the aboriginals, many of whom were killed If they didn’t die from warfare, they died from diseases

Treaty of Waitangi Treaty was signed February 6, 1840
It was signed between the British and the Maori tribe This treaty gave control of New Zealand over to the British But there were problems with translation The British-felt the treaty gave them complete control The Maori-felt the treaty gave the British “governorship”
