What is character development?
What is a… Static character Dynamic character Which one of these can be associated with character development? Character development – when a character’s personality, values, or emotions change because of conflicts in the plotline In “The Imitation Game,” did Alan Turing have any character development? Joan Clarke? Alan’s coworkers? The detective?

How does character development affect the plot?
Not all movies have character development (think about Charlie Chaplin and his comedy) Comedies sometimes do not have character development Character development is associated with reflection and improvement When a character has development, is leads to resolutions in the plotline Think about the bully in “Lou” Character development is tied to conflict resolution Especially Man vs. Self Character development can often drive the plot

Six Stages of Character Development
Living fully in original identity (정체) Desire or destiny (운명) Moving toward essence (본질) without leaving identity Fully committed to essence, but growing fear Living new truth, but can lose everything The journey complete, new identity achieved All of these points can be connected to the plotline

Group Work – Creative Writing
In groups, create a fictional character that starts with one identity and changes to another through conflict. What is the original identity? Is it conflicted with reality? What is the desire associated with the new identity? How does the character achieve his/her desire? Is the character comfortable with his/her new identity? Write at least three paragraphs in your groups about this character.
