The Bitter Brother Luke 15:20-32
The heir who remained faithful is often maligned by his bad attitude. But the father did not speak evil of him, but tried to soothe his hurt. We need to consider the brother for everyone who has ever been left behind to pick up the pieces of things others broe

Brethren For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: "I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.“ Hebrews 2:11-12 Jesus came, lived and died to be our brother. This relationship is divine and present in the assembly.

A Reason For Bitterness
The hurt from being forsaken 2 Timothy 4:10 The pain of bearing witness to hurt Genesis 44:34 Frustration of doing all the work Matthew 20:1-15 2Ti 4:10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica--Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia.11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. Ge 44:34 "For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?“ Sometimes it is easier to forgive someone who has wronged you than when someone has wronged someone you love

Learning About Forgiveness
“Son, you are always with me” The blessing of being with our Father - Greater than the consequences of sin - Don’t be tricked: people in sin hurt - Without hope – Ephesians 2:12 - An enemy of God – James 4:4 Eph 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. Jas 4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Learning About Forgiveness
“All that I have is yours” The blessing of having our Father’s possessions - Our eternal hope -Colossians 1:5 - Access to the Father by prayer – John 16:23 Col 1:5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, Joh 16:23 "In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.

Learning About Forgiveness
“We have to celebrate and rejoice” Having the mind of God towards sinners 1. Desperately seeking their return – Romans 9:2-3 2. Rejoicing when they return – Luke 15:10 3. Demonstrating our love – 2 Corinthians 2:1-8 Ro 9:1 ¶ I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, Lu 15:10 "Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
13
Application from the Faithful Son
Our love for sinners needs to follow the Father - We cannot pursue them into sin - We must rejoice and embrace them on return It is easy to become bitter - Bitterness has a dangerous result
14
Hebrews 12:14-15 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled
