What is work Chapter 4 section 1
2
Key Concepts When is work done on an object?
How do you determine the work done on an object: What is power?
3
Key terms Work Joule Power
4
The meaning of work Work: When you exert a force on an object that causes the object to move some distance. Work is done on an object when the object moves in the same direction in which the force is exerted. No motion, not work has been done. The object must move some distance..
5
Your not working when you carry books
To do work on an object, the force your exert must be in the same direction as the objects motion.
6
Calculating work The amount of work done on an object can be determined by multiplying force times distance. Work = Force x Distance Your forces unit is in N Your distance unit is in m The unit for work is measured in Joule’s (J) Joule: the amount of work you do when you exert a force of 1 newton to move an object a distance of one meter. There will be a quiz question on this equation.
7
Power Power: the rate at which work is done.
Power equals the amount of work done on an object in a unit of time. An object that has more power than another object does more work in the same time. Power = Work / Time Power = (Force x Distance) / Time The unites for power are in joule per second (J/s). This is also known as the watt 1 J/s = 1 W
