In the end Narcissus sees a reflection of himself in a mountain pool and falls in love with it. He initially believes that its a nymph who is toying with him and goes through the actions to win over the ‘stranger’. He falls in the water, and is turned into a flower that is found in the world today.

Connection to the modern world
Beauty and the Beast: Narcissus thought of himself as too good for anyone, much like the Beast. They are both punished for their selfishness, although Narcissus’ punishment is permanent. The Little Mermaid: Echo, much like Ariel, has lost her voice and cannot speak to anyone. These two characters also have the similarity of being infatuated with people who do not return their feelings (initially), and struggle with showing their affection to the other person through communication.

Lesson taught The lesson this myth teaches is to be truthful to your friends. The reason Echo is in the position she is in is because she lied to Juno. The myth also teaches the importance of being humble. Narcissus truly loved no one but himself, and so in return, he was punished and will never be able to know truly what love is.
