2 The Gallipoli Campaign
World War I was much more than a European conflict All the Great Powers looked for other allies around the globe to tip the balance February 1915: Promising strategy for the Allies was to attack a region in the Ottoman Empire known as the Dardanelles Gateway to the Ottoman Capital (Constantinople) Became known as the Gallipoli Campaign Turkish troops defended the region Gallipoli turned into another stalemate December, Allies gave up the campaign and began to evacuate 2

3 Battles in Africa & Asia
Germany’s colonial possessions came under assault Japanese quickly overran German outposts in China British and French recruited subjects in their colonies for the struggle Fight troops came from India, South Africa, Senegal, Egypt Algeria, & Indochina Many fought and died on the battlefield Some colonial subjects wanted nothing to do with their European rulers’ conflicts Others volunteered in the hope that service would lead to their independence 3

4 America Joins the Fight
1917: War shifted to the high seas January: The Germans announced that their submarines would sink without warning any ship in the waters around Britain Policy called Unrestricted Submarine Warfare May 7, 1915: A German Submarine sunk British passenger ship Lusitania 128 US Citizens died American public was outraged Germans knew unrestricted submarine warfare would lead to war with the United States Ignoring President Wilson, Germany sank 3 American ships April 2, 1917: US enters war with Allies 4
