Rhetorical appeals Rhetoric is the art of persuasion.
The goal of persuasion is to change others’ point of view or to move others to take action. Speakers/writers will appeal to: Ethos (authority, ethics) Logos (statistics, facts, proof) Pathos (emotions or values)

As you listen to the speech: 1) Think about the 6 elements of communication and identify them in this sample 2) Look for the use of rhetorical appeals 2)Make an outline/graphic representation of his main points 3) be able to comment on the effectiveness of the speech (with the audience in mind)

Dig in! Identify the speaker, audience, and message.
Create an outline or graphic representation of the main ideas presented in the speech. Discuss the purpose, method and tone. Additional questions: How does the audience influence the speaker’s diction (give specific examples)? How do you know the tone of the speech? Is the speech effective? Why/why not? Which of the three appeals does the speaker use most? How? Why?

Identify: Author, Audience and Method What is the author’s message? What is his purpose? Describe his tone? Highlight/label any appeals that the author uses. Which are the most prominent? The most effective? Choose three “lines” that you feel are most effective…what makes them important/effective? Write a brief response to this article (your personal opinion).
