A Selection of Slides Related to ISCCP Radiance Calibration (from Bill Rossow)
4
Current Steps in ISCCP Calibration Procedure
Geo-to-Leo Normalization using co-located and coincident full resolution radiances Leo-to-Leo Normalization using long-term statistics of the global and target distributions of clear-sky radiances over ocean and land Compare co-located and coincident Geo-to-Leo retrievals of surface and cloud properties Monitoring Radiance Statistics at sub-monthly time scale Monitoring long-term statistics of Cumulus-Cirrus and Stratus-Deep Convection amounts as well as all physical quantities retrieved
5
VIS Monitor PM Orbiters
Current status of ISCCP VIS calibration of afternoon polar orbiters. 5
6
IR AM&PM Warm Anomalies
Current status of ISCCP IR calibration of afternoon polar orbiters – hot end of range.
7
Cloud Type Variations HIGH CIRRUS CUMULUS LOW
Monitoring calibration anomalies by watching “extreme” clouds – low VIS (cirrus and cumulus), cold and hot clouds. CUMULUS LOW
8
Cloud Type Variations HIGH CONVECTIVE CIRRUS CUMULUS STRATUS LOW
Monitoring calibration anomalies by watching “extreme” clouds – high VIS (convective and stratus), cold and hot clouds. CUMULUS STRATUS LOW

IR & VIS Radiance Calibration Activities
ISCCP VIS & IR record for weather satellites (1981 – current) Some issues with latest AVHRRs Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System IR for weather satellites against AIRS & IASI VIS calibration under preparation NASA activities Comparison of various VIS calibrations (direct lunar, comparisons to MODIS, MISR, SeaWifs, DCC method) NOAA results (VIS record for 1979—current)

Results based on Data at:
● AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x): cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/clavr/patmosx ● International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP): isccp.giss.nasa.gov ● Land Long Term Data Record (LTDR): ltdr.nascom.nasa.gov/ltdr/avhrr_calib_1.html ● Comprehensive information on NESDIS’s effort to characterize the current AVHRR calibration and the historical instrument characteristics is here: NESDIS v3 is about to be released.

ISCCP – GSICS Issues ISCCP is interested to use the GSICS results
A comparison of ISCCP to GSICS calibration results is required IF GSICS are of equal or better quality ISCCP will use GSICS calibration for (re-)processing GSICS to ensure that the calibration results are unique and reproducible For reprocessing campaign in 2010 IR and VIS calibration data would be appreciated
